  Ballantyne Cup, 9k-2.6k handicap races, Strand Park, Lower Hutt, 28 June 2008

The round-the-stopbanks races enjoyed conditions far better than forecast. Peter Stevens won the 1921 Ballantyne Memorial Cup after a delayed start (distracted by encouraging his daughter Julieta in the J-team race). Jeff Galt and Natham Bramley were second the third under handicap. Belinda Buck is the holder of the women's Shirley Barton Trophy for 2008, with Karen Jenkinson and returnee Barbara Tucker the runners-up.

Fleetest males were Grant McLean (despite experimenting with a course variant on the far side of the railway bridge - a minute add-on, he reckons) with Stephen Day and Graeme Lear chasing him in. Quickest female over the 9k was Marjolein Ros (not bad for someone still grieving the Netherlands' elimination from the 2008 Euro Cup) with Robyn Stansfield and Michele Allison in second and third places.

Only five of our under 20s entered the two-lap Railway/Ewen Bridge circuit (5.25k). Winner under handicap of the Shirley Barton Trophy was Nicole Mitchell, while Evan Cooper took away the Sir Ian McLellan Cup. Evan was the fastest male, and Nicole the fastest female. The J-team did one lap of the U20 race (2.62k). The champion girl today was Anderley Stevens, who wins the Piano House Trophy.  On the boys side, the winner was Jonathan Beresford (Junior Handicap Cup, held last year by his brother Sean!). The fastest pair in this race were Jonathan and another Stevens, Julieta. All told, 28 June 2008 was a good day for the Stevens clan out on the stopbanks.

The walkers had a training walk around the stopbanks. At the afternoon tea, we were introduced to former member Brian Derwin, who distinguished himself in the club in the late 1940s and through the 1950s. Brian was one of the pioneers in Wellington of the "hard work" school of runners, using himself as a guinea pig (sounds like Arthur Lydiard), and acquiring knowledge and experience that made him such an outstanding coach in later years. Brian won the Ballantyne Cup in 1954.

Thanks to supporters, marshalls (Alan and Todd Stevens, Rees Buck, Rohan Biggs), timekeepers and recorders (John Turner,  Peter Maunder, Bruce and Noeleen Perry) and handicappers (Jennie Liddell, Don Dalgliesh and Jim Kerr).
