The Bays Turkey Trot

A field of 26 contested the 2006 Bays Turkey Trot.
For those not in the know, a Turkey Trot is an event in which the winner is the person who completes the race as
close as possible to the time they nominate before the race starts (no watches may be worn). The
race is over a measured 5k course from
Island
Bay
to
Lyall
Bay
. This year's winner was Brendon McCauley from the Wainuiomata Club who asked
Geoff Henry what time he should put down – Geoff suggested 35.30 and Brendon walked 35.30. Runner-up
was Liz Tomlinson from Olympic who was just four seconds off her nominated time, 3rd was Margaret Bray from
Scottish (six seconds out) and 4th Peter Baillie (seven seconds astray). Furthest
off nominated time was John Hines (Scottish) whose optimism was undermined by a bout of the flu last week.
First across the line was Peter Baillie (Scottish), who
cut out the 5k in 28:52, a smart time, given the wind. Second home was Richard
Willis (Valleys) in 32:59, and the battle for 3rd and 4th between Sevana Minassian (Victoria - 33:33)
and Diane Isherwood (Wainuiomata – 33:32) had to be seen to be believed, but Diane’s strength saw her cross the line
just in front. Fifth competitor home (and the only junior) was WHAC’s Alison
Samson in 34:44.
Pace judgement was generally very good – the range was from exactly on to 8:44 off, with an average of 1:34.
The median variation was just over a minute.

The Bays Relay
Scottish was first in the senior
men (but only three seconds ahead of the Scottish junior men), M19, women, senior women, masters women, and third in the masters men and W19 grades. We had
24 teams of five
each competing. A strong north-westerly put the acid on some runners.
The
big races were between the Scottish men's A and the junior men's A teams (Rees catching them in the last few hundred
metres), between the P-teams (men's 3, 4, and 5), between the master's men (Scottish teams 3 and 4). Judging from the
way places changed
through the race, there were some good battles for some teams.
Lap distances are 4.77k, 4.63k, 4.81k, 3.86k, and 4.00k..
This was the first of three road running relays: the other two are the Belvedere Block Relay near Carterton (3x 7k loops) on
16 September and then the BIG ONE, the National Road Relay Championships, in Feilding on 7 October.
