Brooks Waterfront 5k Series, 18 August 2009

By Todd Stevens

The best weather conditions of the series so far greeted the 122 keen runners and walkers who fronted for the 3rd Brooks Waterfront 5k, continuing the excellent start for the new season.  A moderate southerly gave everyone a small boost over the last k, leading to a number of SPBs (series personal bests).

Hamish Carson repeated last week's win, but he was pushed all the way by James Coubrough. This competition pushed both to amazing times, with Hamish recording 15:07, only 6 seconds outside the long standing course record held by Terefe Ejigu. Will we see a sub-15min performance soon? Top Scottish runner Stefan Smith is predicting it by the end of September. James and Hamish will renew their battle at this Saturday's Wellington 10k road championships. Then next week James leaves for Europe to represent NZ in the World Mountain Running Championships. Good luck, James!

Olympian Nyla Carroll made it two wins from three starts, clocking her best time in the series of 18:10. She was chased home by Tina Harris, who is improving all the time.

Tim Dutton also back up last week's win in the men's walk, and in doing so claimed the Series Leader's yellow shirt provided by our sponsor Brooks. Terri Grimmett won the women's walk, and claimed the yellow shirt for the women, after a 2nd place in the walk in week one and competing in the running section last week. Keep an eye out for these T-shirts around the Bays. They are a sign of high achievement!

It was great to see the personal battles play out tonight, in particular the inter-office rivalries between PricewaterhouseCoopers employees. PwC has had over 20 employees competing in each of the first three races, and the challenges issued and bets made have generated a lot of fun and interest in the 5k event.

A big thanks to our sponsors - Brooks for the tour leader shirts and spot prizes (Brooks shoes will up for grabs as a spot prize next week), the Loaded Hog for the free (larger!) beer afterwards and bar tabs as spot prizes, and Lifestyle Sports for the gift vouchers.

And thanks also to the contingent of Scottish female members that turned up to help especially captain Aubrey and the turnaround, together with regulars Dan (starter), Ryan (results), David (recorder), Bart (timing), and Dave (drinks).

We look forward to seeing you all back again in the coming weeks. Spread the word around your friends and workmates. Issue a few challenges and then enjoy some post race analysis over a beer.

And a reminder that if you would like to run / walk a 10k race this coming Saturday, 22 August, then you can enter the Wellington running / walking races at Trentham. The course is a 5 lap, flat, accurate 10k. Over 100 people will be participating in the 10k run, with ALL abilities welcome (just like the Tuesday night 5ks). Check out details on the Scottish website: www.scottishathletics.org.nz. If you would like to enter, email Dave: ledparsons@xtra.co.nz
