Brooks Waterfront 5k Series, 22 September 2009

The numbers of competitors keeps growing with nearly 170 tonight. A strengthening northerly wind got up around 5.30pm and slowed times, and as the World of Wearable Arts performances approach the number of pedestrians our competitors have to race through seems to be increasing. This challenge did not slow Rees Buck of the Scottish club who was a clear winner in the men’s race at 15m11s. Last week’s winner and series leader Hamish Carson held off Ryan Woolley (both Scottish) in a good race for second and third in 15m28s to 15m36s. Olympian and series leader Nyla Carroll returned after a week off to another emphatic and untroubled win in 17m 55s.

The number of walkers continues to be low in this series but the quality is good. Tim Dutton had yet another win in 28m 39s which he was satisfied with since he won the Pelorus Trust Half Marathon Walk on Sunday. Ian Morton and Philip Grimmett had a close race in the men’s walk for second and third places finishing in 31m 48s and 31m 52s. Terri Grimmett was once again far too good for the women walkers winning in 30m 28s ahead of Daphne Jones in 37m 22.

This was the second week of the Participation Competition. There will be prizes for eight competitors who compete in the most races between 15 September and 15 December. It is not too late to enter this contest, just keep on turning out.Remember that next week the clock will have gone forward an hour but our start times do not change.
