Brooks Waterfront 5k Series, 29 September 2009

By David Lonsdale

More than 50 new runners registered this evening and they together with a big turn out from the Scottish club’s top senior men, women and juniors swelled numbers to 177 finishers (yet another record). The big turnout was despite showers and a persistent northerly wind making for less than ideal conditions.

There was a great contest for the men’s race with the fastest time going to Rees Buck (NZ's representative at last year's World Cross Country championships) for the second week. Stefan Smith chased him to the line and was given the same time of 15:03. They were very close to our men’s all time record of 15:01 but without series leader Hamish Carson to push them we still await the magic time of a sub 15 minute race. Ryan Woolley in 15:08 was a close third and he was followed by a line-up of Wellington top distance runners. With the New Zealand Road Relay Championships on in Christchurch in just under two weeks time, many were using tonight's race as a selection trial / fitness test. Best wishes to everyone heading south.

Nyla Carroll, the women’s series leader, showed that she knows her way around the course better than anyone and was fastest in 17:43. Melissa Moon recently returned from international duty at the World and Commonwealth mountain running championships was second in 18:02 with Kirsty Morris third in 18:09.

The number of walkers continues to be low. Tim Dutton the men’s series leader continues his domination setting the fastest time of 28:54. Terri Grimmett had no opposition to set the fastest women’s walking time at 30:04.

The prize-giving held in our sponsor, The Loaded Hog, was very well supported by competitors. The spot prizes from Brooks, Lifestyle Sports and The Loaded Hog were well spread out among new and old registered runners. Will your number come up next week? Remember you need to turn up to the prize-giving to be in to win.

And remember the participation prize: This will reward the 8 participants who complete the most races from 15 September to 15 December. The top three will receive a Brooks prize pack valued at $200 and the next five will receive a Brooks prize pack valued at $100.

A big thanks to the large contingent of Scottish race walking members that turned up to help officiate tonight. Lost property: Two tops were left behind and can be collected next week at the registration desk.
