Brooks Waterfront 5k Series, 8 September 2009

By Todd Stevens

Another excellent turnout of over 140 runners and walkers for the 6th Brooks Waterfront 5k. Consistent with prior weeks, a keen northerly wind made for tough going in places. But overall, times were very good with a large number of best times.

We had a change to the men's yellow shirt holder tonight, with Mathew Rogers taking advantage of previous holder Hamish Carson's absence. Well done Mathew. Wear that bright yellow shirt with pride!

Cary Chaffee was our overall winner tonight with a fast 15min 49sec. An American, Cary is on an extended NZ visit and hopes to improve on his 3min 49sec 1500m time this coming summer athletics season. Olympian Nyla Carroll clocked up yet another win and just keeps getting faster. Tonight she joined the elite group of sub 18min females with a time of 17min 50sec.

Yellow shirt holder Tim Dutton recorded another win in the walk (28.06) while Frances Le Fort (34.10) led the women walkers home.

It was great to see some personal battles played out tonight, in particular the inter-office rivalries between PricewaterhouseCoopers Partners and staff. PwC Partners John Shewan and Chris Leatham, while out drinking last Friday night, decided to wage some money on a head to head battle. Chris was the victor tonight (only by a few seconds) in 19min 19sec, but the challenged pushed both to season best times.

Participation prize: From next week there will be a great new participation competition. This will reward the 8 participants who complete the most races from 15 September to 15 December. The top 3 will receive a Brooks prize pack valued at $200 and the next 5 will receive a Brooks prize pack valued at $100. In the event of a tie, winning names will be drawn from a hat.

A big thanks to our sponsors - Brooks for the tour leader shirts and spot prizes, the Loaded Hog for the free beer afterwards and bar tabs as spot prizes, and Lifestyle Sports for the gift vouchers. And thanks also to the contingent of Scottish members that turned up to help. We look forward to seeing you all back again in the coming weeks.  Spread the word around your friends and workmates.  Issue a few challenges and then enjoy some post race analysis over a beer from the Loaded Hog.
