Excellent conditions for track and field: overcast and relatively still. College students are working towards the NZ Secondary Schools Championships in Hamilton on 4-5 December. Today was a day for underdistance events and this produced a huge turnout, putting some stress on the programme and timing. The college league was combined with an open meeting which saw two age-group world records set.

In a four-person time trial, Bernie Portenski set two masters age-group world records today in the 3000m in 10:41.21 and then continued on for five more laps to set the 5000m record in 18:12.30. The former W5559 records were set a dozen or so years ago by German Edeltraud Pohl: 3000m in 10:47.94 set in 1991 (when she was 55), while the 5000m record of 18:32.5 was set in 1992 (at 56). Bernie holds many age world records (for individual years), but until today held only one WR for an age group, which is a more widely recognised achievement (10,000m in 36:35.96 for the W5055 group which she set at Newtown Park in 15 March 2003 when she was 53). After turning 55 in August, she has had her sights on these records.
