Secondary School Road Championships, Waikanae, 19 September 2001
A beautiful day out on the coast saw 150 or so college students compete in the annual road races.
Ross Sommerville of Scots College was the clear winner in the 6k event for senior boys, 35 seconds ahead of fellow Scots student Hamish Clareburt. In third place was Jamie White of Onslow. The senior girls race (4k) was less close: Sarah Barker (Chilton St James) held out Sarah Beresford (Wellington High) by 43 seconds. Third was a rapidly-closing Elizabeth Campkin of Aotea College.
In the junior (under 16) races, Alice Mason (Wellington Girls) led old rival Abie Russ (HVHS) for most of the 4k race and finished seven seconds ahead. Both were well clear of Jenna Brooking of Sacred Heart. In the boys' race, it was Hutt International Boys School first and second with Ben Christophers taking a commanding lead over Tom O'Sullivan. Tom held off a late challenge from Onslow's Tristan Rodway.
For the third formers (plus the odd second former), we saw Scots' Nicholas Drabble lead Hutt Valley High's Shaun Hunt home for the boys, with Sam Forest (Paraparaumu College) in third spot, while for the girls, the Wellington Girls pair of Ilandre Bester and Rachel Blacklaws were separated by Chilton's Rebecca Keat.
