Loaded Hog 5k Summer Series, Race 12, 27 February 2007

78 participants fronted for tonight’s Loaded Hog 5k races with 20 race walkers and 58 runners. The southerlies became stronger as the night progressed but still offered a good tail wind on the homeward leg of the race.

Fastest race walker tonight was Ian Morton, recording 31:25 with a fair break back to Johnny Hines in 32:44 and Bart Jones in third place with 33:38. Steaming home for first place in the woman’s race was Melissa Carr who recorded 32:04 with Ingrid Woodhouse taking second place in 32:25 and then next was Bev Crosbie who posted 35:01.

Quickest of the runners was Grant McLean with a leisurely 17:20 (before his onslaught on the New Plymouth Marathon this coming weekend). Just behind him was Jed Brent in 17:22 with just 4 seconds back to Tim Armstrong in 17:26. Fastest woman tonight was Michelle Hopkins in 18:36 with second place going to Betty Harp in 20:59 and next home was Karen Gillespie in 21:12.

Thanks as always to the Scottish Harrier members who give up their time to officiate these races – Dan, Kathryn, Todd, Karl, Api, Neville and Zachary (minder).

As tonight was the 12th race in our Series 2 (Summer Season) of races which started back on 10 October 2006, we were especially pleased to celebrate those who have strongly supported our races each week/fortnight (as the case may be). We had 24 competitors who qualified for the Special Incentive prizes offered by The Loaded Hog – our principal sponsor. Most improved over the 12-race series went to Brian Garmonsway (in absentia) and Mick Rice took away the best participation $100 gift vouchers. You had to have participated in at least 7 of the 12 races to qualify.

Our usual weekly Loaded Hog spot prize draw was also very popular with tonight providing a lucky night for walkers as they scooped many of the prizes on offer.

So now what?

We return to weekly Loaded Hog races from next Tuesday, 6 March 2007 – same time, same place, same course. We continue Series 3 over the next six weeks (Autumn 2007) as we use these races to gear up our fitness in preparedness for a new winter season of harriers.

We look forward to seeing many of our new friends from the Loaded Hog series join us at Scottish for some runs – Opening Day is Saturday, 31 March 2007. As with most running clubs, we welcome anyone to come along – walkers – runners – joggers – juniors – supporters – just come and see what happens at Scottish. More about that as Opening Day activities draw nearer.
