Loaded Hog 5k Summer Series, Race Nine, 16 January 2007

A great start to 2007 with 98 participants at the first 5k race for this new year. Weather conditions were near perfect with just a light northerly changing to a light southerly during race. Given it was a humid day and lots of people were enjoying the sun – especially around Oriental Bay – the run was hot and the foot traffic was difficult.

Fastest around the course tonight was young Terefe Ejigu who went out for just a light trot – given he is aiming to run a sub-31 minutes 10k at Newtown Park this weekend in an effort to run a qualifying time for World Junior Cross Country Champs. His time was a leisurely 17:51 and he was followed closely by a fellow junior clubmate and Wellington College schoolmate – David Reynolds who recorded 17:57. Third home was James Turner with a time of 18:02. Fastest woman was Michelle Hopkins who recorded 19:02. Next home was Sally-Ann Spencer in 19:49 and third home was Aubrey Begley in 20:03.

Quickest of the race walkers was again Mark Woodhouse with a solid walk in 29:49. Next home was Ian Morton in 31:44 with Johnny Hines in third place with 33 minutes flat. Ingrid Woodhouse took line honours for the women, with a time of 34:07. Susan Henderson was second across the line in 35 flat.

Thanks to the helpers tonight Dan, Bob, Vaile, Tina and Richard, plus Zachary as minder at home base.

Further thanks to The Loaded Hog – the complimentary beverages slipped down easily tonight and also Lifestyle Sports for their continued support of our 5k Fun Run/Walk series of races.

Next Tuesday, you are again welcome to join us at Newtown Park to learn some running drills, better mechanics and economies = learn how to run faster smarter. Oh, we do reps as well, so it’s all good fun. Start time 6pm at the track.

Otherwise – good training – and we’ll see you for the next Loaded Hog race on Tuesday, 30 January 2007. Same time, same place.
