Loaded Hog 5k Race, Autumn Series, Race 1, Queens Wharf, 4 March 2008

The gentle south-westerly that was evident this afternoon promptly died away to nothing at race start time providing near perfect conditions for tonight’s waterfront 5k race. 55 finishers in all with a huge 11 lifetime PBs recorded no less than 13 season’s PBs – as far as I can detect. If your run was a life-time PB – please e-mail me.

Walkers: Tim Dutton continued on with further improvement tonight to again claim first place overall in a time of 30:20. John Leonard took second place with a time of 33:57. In the woman’s race, Carol Brieseman and Hannot Minot continued their personal battle to take line honours and it was Carol who prevailed tonight with a three-second advantage over Hannah. Their times were 35:18 and 35:21, respectively. Andrea Adams claimed third place in a time of 37:03 – just missing a season’s PB.

Runners: Scottish athlete Hayden Spearman blasted around the calm waterfront course tonight in a lifetime PB time of 16:08. This chopped nearly 30 seconds off his previous best and afterwards Hayden conceded he went out fast thinking he was still running on the track, then steadied a tad but stormed home to put daylight between him and second place. This went to Brian Garmonsway with a time of 16:44. Third place went to Jason Waite in 17:09. The women’s race was also won by a young Scottish athlete in Aubrey Begley. Like her male counterpart, Aubrey also posted a lifetime PB to win tonight’s race with her first sub 19-minute time of 18:55. Second place went to an even younger athlete (Olympic Harriers) Victoria Sugden who, not to be outdone also smashed her lifetime PB by almost 30 seconds in recording 19:31. I recall just two weeks back telling Victoria that she will never need to think about the 20-minute barrier again. Seems she has proved this to be true! In keeping with the theme of Lifetime PB’s, third place went to Tara Donnelly (a relatively new participant in the Hog 5ks) in a time of 20:44.

Well done all.

Thanks to Dan Powell, Bruce and Noeleen Perry, Todd Stevens, Karl Woodhead and Karen Gillespie for your time officiating tonight’s race.

Remember -we are back to weekly Loaded Hog 5k races – the next race is Tuesday, 11 March 2008 (same times – no change at this point) until 8 April 2008 – just five weeks left of Loaded Hog 5ks.
