Hog 5k Race, Autumn Series, Race 4, Queens Wharf, 25 March 2008
Walkers:
Tim Dutton took line
honours this evening and broke through the 30 minute barrier in doing so – walking a series PB time of 29:55. Second was
John Leonard (33:42) with Geoff Iremonger taking third place with a time of 34:44. The women’s race saw Terri Grimmett
back at the top spot again (as she successfully rotates between running, walking and triathlons it would seem) with her time
being 32:11. Carol Brieseman had to be content with second place tonight in 35:24 but no doubt has a bigger picture as she
heads towards the 100k Oxfam Race to be held shortly in Taupo. Third place was yet again taken by Andrea Adams who posted
37:38. A warm welcome back to
Barbara Tucker who did not record a time tonight as she inadvertently took a wrong turn on the return leg of the race. Runners:
First home tonight went to a first time Hog 5k runner in masters runner David Carrigan. I’m informed David is on track to
run in the 2008 Stockholm Marathon. His winning time tonight was 16:44. Not far behind in second was Todd Stevens, returning
to racing after a lengthy time off the scene with injury (no doubt having to show some form to lead by example with his
fellow PWC runners). Todd’s time was 16:49 and just a few seconds back was young Jason Waite who yet again posted a
lifetime PB. Since 28 August 2007, Jason has steadily trimmed his 5k time from 19:39 down to his first ever sub 17 minutes
run - his time being 16:51. Congrats and a HUGE "well done," Jason! Victoria Sugden returned
victorious this evening in winning the women’s race in a time of 19:42. Second place went to Karen Gillespie in a very
good time of 20:30 (certainly a season’s PB and perhaps even a lifetime PB?). Third place went to first time runner
Carolyn Boyd with a time of 20:34. I stand to be corrected, but I think Caroline may shortly be on the way to compete in the
London Marathon. If so, you will be accompanied by another Hog 5k regular in Brian Hayes. Both are masters runners who will
no doubt perform very well in their grades. Go well – the both of you.
Congratulations to those
who ran lifetime PBs this evening - With the conditions to suit I thought we were going to see a few. Well done to Tracey
Christensen (- 50s); Mandy Simpson (first sub 22 minutes run and shaved 34s off); Edward Sargisson (first sub 21 minute run
and shaved 25s off); Brent Gilchrist (broke through 23 minute barrier and shaved off 19s); Chris Napier ( first sub 21
minutes run and shaved 19s off); Peter McCorkindale (first sub 20 minute run and shaved off 19s); Jason Waite (-5s); Ron
Zonneveld (-5s) and lastly Jeremy Pitt (who says he beat a time he ran as a Junior but can’t quite recall the exact
seconds. At my stage of life – I know exactly how that feels Jeremy – although that’s my problem, not yours J
J).
Congratulations to everyone as well as those who ran season’s best times as well. Thanks to Dan Powell,
Todd Stevens, plus Scottish senior women helpers: Sally-Ann Spencer, Rebecca Speirs, Loretta Desourdy and Pam Graham
(turn-around official). Just two more weeks left for the Loaded Hog 5k races – the next race is Tuesday, 1 April 2008. A warm welcome will be extended to all Loaded Hog 5k participants who wish to join us on Scottish Opening Day this Saturday – the first pack run of the 2008 Winter season calendar. Remember - If you participate in the Hog 5k – we will have a pack going out at your pace. Come and see what really happens at a running/walking club.
