Loaded Hog 5k Race, Autumn Series, Race 5, Queens Wharf, 1 April 2008

Well, the strong northerlies returned for tonight’s race, but perhaps it could have been worse. A solid 89 finishers tonight. PBs, however, were not prevalent –  just three lifetime PBs and 10 season’s best times. Do let me know if I have missed your efforts or should note them differently.

Walkers: Tim Dutton again took line honours this evening with a winning time of 30:42. He had stiff opposition,  however, with first time (in 2007-2008 season) Hog 5k race walker Richard Willis finishing just 5 seconds back in second place with 30:47. John Leonard was third male home in a time of 33:38. In the women’s race, Carol Brieseman was first home recording a consistent time in the low 35 minutes. Officially, it was 35:15. Second place went to Daphne Jones in 38:41 and third went to first time Hog competitor Carley Boomer in 41:25.

Runners: Despite the adverse weather conditions, tonight’s race was won in a great sub-16 minute time by young Hastings Harriers athlete Ross Morrison with a winning time of 15:58. Second place went to Hutt Valley runner Bryn Davies (as he returns to the Hog 5k race series) with a good time of 16:33. Brian Garmonsway claimed third place with a time of 17:01.

The women’s race saw a top 1 and 2 finish from two young ladies competing for the first time in the Hog 5k. First home was Lizzie Middleton with a good time of 19:21 and not far behind in second was Tineke Berthelsen taking 19:38. Taking third, and just sneaking under the magical 20 minute barrier was Victoria Sugden with a finishing time of 19:58.

Congratulations to those three athletes who ran lifetime PBs this evening – although the improvements were small, as they say “small fish are sweet” and given the conditions - well done to Stuart Holden (-8s); Peter McCorkindale (-6s) and Jo Badham (-3s).J J. Congrats also to everyone who ran season’s best times as well.

Thanks to Dan Powell, Bruce and Noeline Perry, Todd Stevens and Karen Gillespie – to paraphrase the Aussie Tourism advert: “Scottish Senior Men – Where the bloody hell are ya?” Hope they were all out training hard.

And so we have reached the finale of the season – with next week’s race being the last Hog 5k until we return again in August 2008. The light was just barely with us at 7:30pm tonight but we should be OK with the same start times - even though Daylight Savings kick in over this coming weekend. As an option, we shall offer an additional start time – as an extra wave of walkers/runners - at 5:30pm next Tuesday 8 April 2008. If it’s a clear night we should be OK but if it’s a grim night then the early time slots will probably be a welcome option.

Lastly, it was great to have at least 20 guests come and join our huge member turnout for a pack run with Scottish last weekend. Again, we extend a warm welcome to all Loaded Hog 5k participants who wish to join us on Saturday – an open day for friends and guest for a pack run from our Prince of Wales Park clubrooms. Remember - If you participate in the Hog 5k – we will have a pack going out at your pace. Come and see what really happens at a running/walking club.
