Loaded Hog 5k Race, Spring Series, Race 2, Queens Wharf, 14 August 2007

96 participants in this evening’s waterfront 5k – again greeted by a light southerly which was more cold than strong – with just a few spots of sleety rain added during the race for variety. It was noticeably lighter though, so we look forward to the early introduction of daylight saving in September.

Winners tonight: Walkers – Taking first women and overall again tonight, and posting a PB as well, was Jan Bliekendaal (Trentham United) in a time of 30:17. Next was last week’s runner-up, Andrew Shelley (Trentham United) in 31:14 – also a PB, I gather! Leeane Palmer (Scottish) was third overall in 34:32.

Runners – First home and fastest overall tonight was 800/1500 track specialist Adam Steinmetz (Scottish) in what was perhaps the closest finish of the top three in a very long while. Adam recorded 16:39 to pip (just!) Brian Garmonsway (Trentham United) by one second in 16:40 with just a further second back to Jamie White (Scottish) in 16:41. Sadly my video camera had run out of battery power by then, but it was a great race by all accounts!

Fastest of the women was again Bernie Portenski (Scottish), bettering her time of last week with an 18:47. Second home was younger sister Michele Allison (Scottish) in 19:54 and taking third – this time the Scottish women achieved the trifecta – was Betty Harp (Scottish) who also beat the magical 20-minute barrier with a time of 19:56.

Thanks to the Scottish P Team for officiating tonight’s race: Paul Brydges, Edwin Massey, Ewan Gestro, Karl Woodhead plus Todd Stevens, Dan Powell, Bruce and Noeleen Perry.

The Loaded Hog spot prizes and beverages were well received tonight (very nice and warm inside) and thanks to our special guest selector young Luke McDermott – who also managed to select his dad Wayne’s number for a Hog voucher.

Great to see a return of many regulars from previous series races and the continued support of all local harrier club members and triathletes alike.

See you all next Tuesday, 21 August 2007. We’ll have the video camera shots playing on the big screen for sure.
