Loaded Hog 5k Race, Spring Series, Race 4, Queens Wharf, 28 August 2007

We hit the ton tonight – 101 participants on week 4 of the Loaded Hog waterfront 5k –  on an evening where the southerly got a bit gusty but the threatening rain stayed away (as requested). Later in the evening, the progress of the total lunar eclipse was visible through rapidly passing clouds.

Walkers: Jan Bliekendaal blatted around the course tonight in 29:50 in doing so blasted through the magical 30-minute barrier to record second-fastest time in our races during 2007 – missing by just one second. Great walking Jan! Second woman was Hannah Minot in 35:32 and third was Diane Isherwood with a time of 37:24. Fastest man was Ian Morton who posted a time of 30:53 to take the win, just ahead of Andrew Shelley who walked 31 minutes even and third placing went to John Hines in 32:42.

Runners: After two appearances, both recording second placings, Carl Daucher improved to take first place in tonight’s race and equaled the fastest series time of 16:18 - set last week by Rohan Biggs. Relegated to second this evening, Rohan recorded 16:35 to just edge out Hayden Shearman who posted the same time. Bernie Portenski shaved another five seconds off her time this week to be first woman home in 18:42. Bernie (again picked as a spot prize winner) was well clear of Betty Harp, second in 19:56 and third was again Anna Falloon who improved to edge into the 20-minute band with a time of 20:54.

Thanks to all who officiated tonight – the regular helpers Dan, Todd, Bruce and Noeline Perry along with Scottish masters women - Michele Allison, Emma Brooks, Jeanette Bourke, Bev Hodge, Christine Jones and Karen Gillespie.

Hog staff informed me 75 complimentary drinks were passed out this evening – so at least three out of every four participants enjoyed the after race refreshments and weekly spot prize draw. I must say on a cold night it’s a great place for a quiet beverage or a meal. Some put their Hog vouchers to good use tonight for both.

So until next week then, Race 5 on Tuesday, 4 September 2007 – same time, same place, a little brighter.
