Loaded Hog 5k Race, Spring Series, Race 6, Queens Wharf, 11 September 2007

Better conditions tonight (by comparison to last week’s rain and cold southerly) and 83 participants turned out for the race(s).

Runners: With an appreciably faster start tonight, it was always on the cards that faster times would be posted – and that was definitely the case! No less than 9 PBs and 24 series PBs plus a new series fastest time recorded by tonight’s winner – Carl Daucher who recorded 16:13 and snipped 3 seconds off the previous best race winning time. Second home was Tim Hawkes in a PB of 16:27 and not far behind him was Adam Steinmetz in 16:31 which was also a PB, I gather. The first seven men home were all Wellington Scottish senior men – all gearing up for the annual NZ Road Relay Champs in Timaru in less than a month. The fastest series best time for the women was significantly improved tonight with Gabby O’Rourke (Wellington Harriers) recording 17:38 to win the women’s race. A welcome back to Suzi Richards (Kapiti) who took second in 18:03 and third was Natalie Smith (Scottish) who posted a huge PB in running 18:17 – over a 30 second improvement, I understand!

Walkers: Taking line honours tonight was Ian Morton who posted a personal SPB of 30:45 to win the walk. Second was John Leonard who walked a PB of 32:45 and third was David Lonsdale with a time of 34:15. First woman home was Leeanne Palmer who also recorded a personal SPB (series personal best) with a time of 33:56. Second was young Hannah Minot who also raced to a PB of 34:16 and taking third place was Daphne Jones who took 37:02.

Others who recorded excellent PBs were Edwin Massey, Aubrey Begley, John Skinnon and Mandy Simpson – all Wellington Scottish athletes. Congrats to all – especially anyone whom I have not noted. Sorry about that!

Thanks to the Scottish men’s team for helping to officiate tonight’s race. Rees Buck, Scott Ferguson (turnaround), Stephen Day, Neville Henderson, Peter Kelly, and Bruce Lake, along with Dan Powell, and Bruce and Noeleen Perry.

Congratulations also to the lucky winner’s of sponsors spot prizes tonight – The Loaded Hog $25 gift vouchers – Gabrielle Nicholson; Catherine Manchester; Florence Reynolds and Peter Plowman – and to Suzi Richards who collected the weekly Lifestyle Sports $50 discount voucher.

So, Race 7 of 9 next Tuesday – 17 September 2007. Same time – same place.
