Loaded Hog 5k Race, Spring Series, Race 8, Queens Wharf, 25 September 2007

Bitter cold southerly conditions tonight put off many. However, they missed a reasonably good night for fast times as 63 participants turned out for the race(s).

Runners: With a southerly in play, Hayden Shearman (Scottish) put up his spinnaker on the homeward leg and ran away from all others to a lifetime PB of 16:25 to take first place in this evening’s race. Second home was Adam Steinmetz (Scottish) in 16:32, just ahead of four runners all within nine seconds of each other. Taking that third placing was young Brendon Blacklaws (Scottish) in a time of 16:41 (fresh from his 2nd place in the Wellington Secondary Schools Senior Boys Road Champs – held at the Stadium last Wednesday). The fastest woman tonight was again Gabby O’Rourke (Wellington Harriers), recording 17:40 to win the women’s race. Natalie Smith (Scottish) was second with a time of 18:22, showing she is holding form well to peak in 10 days' time at NZ Road Relay Champs in Timaru and third placing went to Bernie Portenski (Scottish), who I believe has had a brief injury break over the last couple of weeks but still recorded a solid 18:40.

Walkers: Taking line honours of the five walkers tonight was Terri Grimmett with a series PB time of 32:57. John Leonard was not far back in second place overall in 33:15 and third was Leeane Palmer - right behind John with a SB time of 33:20.

Others who recorded excellent PBs tonight were Edwin Massey (two weeks in a row now with another 15 seconds knocked off this evening), Anthony Venning (taking over 20 seconds off), Helen Graeve (who joined the main race tonight and reduced her lifetime PB by a huge 30 seconds), Peter Curry (cut out a huge PB with 23:52) and also Margareth Attwood who reduced her PB by 40 seconds, no less. Congrats to all – especially anyone whom I have not noted. Sorry about that!

Thanks to the Scottish women’s team for helping to officiate tonight’s race: Belinda Buck, Della Laird, Diane Morgan, Loretta Desourdy, Mandy Simpson, Rebecca Speirs, along with Todd Stevens and Dan Powell on the clipboards.

Congratulations also to the lucky winners of sponsors' spot prizes tonight – The Loaded Hog $25 gift vouchers and liquid product – and to Leeane Palmer who collected the weekly Lifestyle Sports $50 discount voucher.

So, Race 9 of 9 in Series 1 next Tuesday – 2 October 2007. Same time – same place.
