A huge leap in the numbers participating tonight with 90 competitors – and no fewer than 24 newbies to our waterfront series of races – WELCOME!! I hope you all enjoyed the improved weather conditions we supplied for this evening's race – light southerlies as promised. And it was great to see so many using the conditions to advantage to record PBs – some I spoke to were able to shave minutes off, while others pushed through that magical "minute" barrier which is always a moment to cherish. WELL DONE to all.

Fastest around the course tonight was Dougal Thorburn in 16:00 flat. However, that could have been better, perhaps, had he not arrived late through traffic, bang on 5:30pm (race start), missed the briefing on the amended course for this series, and started out leading the pack towards the Te Papa Courtyard until those behind him alerted him of correct course. I gather some others took a different way home (not that is any shorter or faster) rather than coming back exactly the same way they went out – that’s why it’s called an Out & Back course, I guess. Never mind - no harm done.

Fastest woman home was again Sally-Ann Spencer with a faster time tonight of 19:12. Quickest around the course in the race walking category was Mike Lane with a 29:42 time – but he was helped by having to try and keep up with the runners (as he missed the start time for the walk). Great motivator, eh Mike! Ian Morton was second and Diane Isherwood again took fastest time honours for the women with a time of 32:29.  

Thanks to tonight’s officials: Dan, Kathryn, Bob, Todd, Jakob (all the way out at the turnaround), Diane (at Cable St corner), Api, Tom B (first year club member out helping – that’s great to see), Noeline and Bruce Perry (long-standing Scottish members and tireless officials within our great sport) plus the added support of our enthusiastic Scottish Women’s Club Captain Rebecca Grainger at the start/finish area.

All in all – a great night, capped off with the complimentary beverage at the Loaded Hog as well as the promise (for some lucky ones) of a spot prize – courtesy of our sponsors – The Loaded Hog and Lifestyle Sports – 53 Willis St .
