Loaded Hog 5k Spring Series, Race Five, 5 September 2006

Well, we cheated the weather gods yet again tonight with only a tricky norwester on some exposed points of the course – perhaps a plus 10 second wind, I’d say, but at least the rain held off till after the prize-giving. An excellent turn-out with 90 participants again provided some close racing (and photo finishes).

Notable achievements tonight were a lifetime 5k PB to Matyas James in 18:09 (as he prepares for a 32k Round Raratonga Race later this month), both Sam Hughes and Aubrey Begley showing excellent improvements and only just missing breaking through their respective 18 & 20 minute targets. I also note Fiona Shearer took another good chunk of time off her Loaded Hog race times of the past few weeks.

At the lead tonight was Dougal Thorburn (fresh from his long distance duathlon victory on Sunday in 1:54) to record the same time as last week of 15:46 to win the open race. Next were fellow Scottish club members Ben Revell, Stephen Day and Angus Jennings – all tuning up nicely for the NZ Road Relay Championships in Feilding on the first Saturday of October. In the women’s race, we saw a great finish over the last 50m with Wellington Scottish’s Sally-Ann Spencer just edging out fellow club member Tina Harris in a sprint finish -although both recording the same time of 19:03.

Yet another longstanding Scottish member, John Hines, led the race walkers home amidst cursing the pope would have blushed over as he just failed to break the magical 32 minute target. Despite his pleading with the timekeepers (nice try Johnny), 32:00 even was the final result. Next home was the first woman Diane Isherwood, recording a leisurely (for her) 33:41.

Thanks to all the Scottish helpers tonight – Dan, Kathryn, Todd, Noeline, Bruce, Maryanne and David.

Loaded Hog weekly prizes were all again well received as was the Lifestyle Sport $50 voucher – won this evening by the well-deserving Lyn Clark, who had a very physical battle to the finish line with Peter Hanson – who before the race was issuing challenges that he was going to beat all he could tonight – even me!!! Well done Peter - great spirit.

That’s all for tonight – Race 5. See you all for race 6 next Tuesday from 5pm onwards.
