Loaded Hog 5k Race, Summer Series, Race 10, Queens Wharf, 29 January 2008

It was another great turnout for the second Loaded Hog 5k race in 2008 with 93 finishers tonight. Yet another 25 new participants to the series of races. The weather was again mild with a very light northerly but quite warm and humid – almost the best night of the season to date. Accordingly, there were a number of PBs and Series PBs so that’s great news for all concerned.

Walkers: Tonight we witnessed an all-time race record for the Loaded Hog 5k Race Walk – in fact in all my time involved in a Scottish-officiated 5k over many many years. 26-year-old Taranaki race walker Glenn Burrell fairly scorched around the course in a time of 23:06. This was some three minutes faster than the previous best time. Fittingly, he was chased home by his dad Tony Burrell, who posted 30:08 for second and third, making it a trifecta for Taranaki race walkers, was Mike Lane who walked 30:52 for third. Fastest woman tonight was again Terri Grimmett who walked the 5k in 32:00 (not quite a PB) with second going to Hannah Minot with a time of 34:59 and third went to Carol Briesman in 36:13.

Runners: Otago Uni student Sam Kidd took line honours in the runners race this evening recording 16:52 to win by eight seconds. Taking second place (in a lifetime PB) was Jason Waite in 17 minutes even and third place went to Brian Garmonsway who took 17:07. The fastest three women were all new to the podium this season - with Erin Whitla (a first time participant in the series) taking first place in 19:17 with a distance back to second and third places which saw just 1 second separating them. Olympic’s junior Victoria Sugden took second (in a PB time) with 20:28 and third went to Pip Jensen (in her first time on the course also) in 20:29.

Personal bests were recorded by eight competitors Peter McCorkindale (-35s); Karaka Tuhakaraina (- 23s); Jason Waite (-20s); Ian Fay (-12s); Matthew Handcock (- 7s); Tracey Christiansen (- 3s); Jo Badham (- 5s); John Shewan, Victoria Sugden. Season’s PBs were recorded by 13 others. Well done to all who achieved improvements tonight.

Thanks to Dan Powell (starter extraordinaire); Bruce and Noeleen Perry, Jeanette Bourke, Todd Stevens, Karl Woodhead and Rohan Biggs for their time to officiate tonight’s race.

I hope you all enjoyed the run, the complimentary beverages courtesy of our race sponsors – The Loaded Hog. $25 Loaded Hog spot prize vouchers were won by Hannah Minot, Rachael Neutze, Karaka Tuhakaraina and Jo Badham. With perseverance on his side, John Skinnon was finally selected by the Loaded Hog barman as the recipient of the Lifestyle Sports – Tawa Dressmart Store $50 weekly spot prize voucher. I’ll e-mail you all on Wednesday to get your address so that the appropriate vouchers can be mailed to you.

Otherwise it’s same time same place of course in a fortnight's time – Tuesday, 12 February 2008.

AN INVITATION:  If any of you choose to do so, please feel free to join me at Newtown Park track on the alternate Tuesday evenings (yes, we are on for Tuesday, 5 February 2008, with a prompt 6pm start - all warmed up) for a session of exercises, drills, stride-outs and repetition runs – all designed to help you run faster. If you haven’t received an email from me and wish to know more – email me  Just two left this summer now .
