Loaded Hog 5k Race, Summer Series, Race 11, Queens Wharf, 12 February 2008

The forecasted thunderstorms did not hit us as suggested, but it was perhaps an influence on the ultimate numbers participating tonight – 58 finishers in all. The brisk southerly was again of assistance on the homeward leg of the race with five PBs being recorded and 14 season's best times.

Walkers: Mike Lane returned for perhaps his last race of the season to record a season’s best time and win with a good time of 30:36. Second place went to Phillip Grimmett who walked a lifetime PB of 31:25 (a huge improvement) and third male place went to Bart Jones in a leisurely 41:08. Terri Grimmett made it a notable double in the family as she also walked a lifetime 5k PB tonight with a time of 31:50 (after backing-up two days after a PB in last Sunday’s Wellington Half) to be first woman home tonight. Second place went to Carol Brieseman in 35:35 and not far behind was Hannah Minot in 35:49 – these two reversing the placings from a fortnight ago.

Runners: As predicted at the start by Brian Garmonsway, Stephen Day was destined to be the race leader and it was to be that way at the finish as well – but it was a close thing with just one second splitting first and second - Stephen recording 16:46 and Brian 16:47. Third placing went to Simon Maister some way back in 17:56. The fastest woman tonight was Marjolein Ros who finally broke through the magical 20-minute barrier she had been threatening over the last couple of months. Her time was 19:56 and this too was backing up from a solid 1:34:32 half marathon just two days earlier (6th open woman). Second place went to first time Hog 5k entrant Janine O’Dea who posted 20 minutes even and third went to Victoria Sugden who ran a significant lifetime PB of 20:02 and is all set to break through to 19 minutes something next run.

Personal bests were recorded by five competitors Phillip Grimmett (-1:01); Karaka Tuhakaraina (a further - 38s from last fortnight’s PB); Victoria Sugden (- 26s); Jo Badham (again reduced her lifetime PB by 20s); and Terri Grimmett (-4s). Well done to all who achieved improvements tonight.

Thanks to Dan Powell, Bruce and Noeleen Perry, Todd Stevens, Rohan Biggs and water boy John Skinnon for their time officiating tonight’s race.

Next race is Tuesday, 26 February 2008 and from there on we shall be back to weekly races (same times – no change at this point) until 8 April 2008 when the light will have almost left us after work.

AN INVITATION:  It’s going to be the final session at Newtown Park track on the alternate Tuesday evenings (yes, we are on for Tuesday, 19 February 2008, with a prompt 6pm start - all warmed up) for a session of exercises, drills, stride-outs and repetition runs – all designed to help you run faster. I’ll e-mail all those who have been attending but if you wish to know more – email me.
