Loaded Hog 5k Race, Summer Series, Race 2, Queens Wharf, 16 October 2007

Almost the worst northerly wind conditions ever – according to some of the wise Scottish officials. So to have 50 participants tonight was not a bad turnout.

Runners: Fastest around the 5k course tonight was Stephen Day (Wellington Scottish) in 16:32. Second place went to Matt Singleton (University Harriers) in 16:41 with a wee break back to a top Scottish Junior in Ryan Woolley who posted 17:02 for third place. Fastest woman tonight was Gabby O’Rourke (Wellington Harriers) in a time of 18:15. Next home was Suzi Richards (Kapiti) in 18:37 with our international guest Lisa Schubert returning to race and take third place in 19:47 for a personal series best time.

Just a handful of personal series bests tonight but we did have an excellent lifetime PB recorded by Rebecca Speirs – fresh from a good run at the recent NZ Road Relay Championships down in Timaru. Congratulations Rebecca!

Walkers:  Alison Samson (Wellington Harriers) turned the tables from last week in taking first place tonight with a solid walk in a personal series best time of 30:19. She headed Jan Bliekendaal (Trentham) who recorded 30:37 for second placed woman and third place went to Terri Grimmett in 33:33. Fastest male was Andrew Shelley (Trentham) who posted 31:40 well clear of John Hines (Scottish) in second place with 33:45. Third went to John Leonard (Scottish) in a time of 34:50.

Thanks to the big team of Scottish senior men members for officiating this evening – plus David Lonsdale (on video duty again) along with Todd Stevens and starter Dan Powell.

Thanks again to the Loaded Hog for sponsor's product as prizes and for the complimentary beverages afterwards whilst we again watched interesting footage of tonight’s race. Winner of the Lifestyle Sports $50 weekly voucher was Robert Bennett – and well received that was as well. Remember – if you wear a size 9 shoe – it’s your birthday as Lifestyle Sports have huge stocks of demo shoes in that size for only $80 or two pairs for just $130. Many other great specials in running shoes, spikes for the track, race flats, off road shoes, whatever you want – just ask for Karen and tell her you are a participant in the Loaded Hog 5k series of races.

A NOTE: The raffle for a $280 pair of Asics shoes was drawn tonight after the race – Congratulations to Emma Brooks – number 27 was the winning ticket number.

A REMINDER:

Oxfam Fundraiser race “Trailwalker” was introduced to participants at tonight’s race. The special offer has been extended.

SPECIAL PRICE OFFER: Register interest in the next seven days - by placing a $25 deposit for entry of a team in the 2008 race and get HALF PRICE entry fees. Team entry normally $600 – but for Hog 5k friends there’s a chance to get entry for just $300. It’s a great team building exercise to aim for – whether it is for a company, a group of friends or club mates, whatever!

Trailwalker is the “world's greatest team challenge.”  Four people, Taupo’s beautiful countryside, one goal: 100k in 36 hours to help overcome poverty and injustice. Any information you may require – logos, background including video can be found on  http://www.oxfamtrailwalker.org.nz/. If you couldn’t make it down tonight but are interested in finding out more – e-mail Logan:  Logan@oxfam.org.nz. You have seven more days to make a decision.

Series Two, Summer 2007/08 – Races start at later times due to daylight savings. Registrations from 5:30pm; walkers start 5:45pm; runners start 6:00pm. So mark it down in your diary now.
