Loaded Hog 5k Race, Summer Series, Race 4, Queens Wharf, 30 October 2007

It was a blustery northerly out on the Wellington waterfront with a couple of really strong head-winds on certain parts of the course. Still, 63 participants completed the course tonight.

Walkers: Marlborough's Dean Crowley returned to the Hog 5k with a victory in tonight’s walk with a good time of 28:55. Second male was John Hines who walked in 33:20 and third place went to John Leonard in 35:06. Fastest woman tonight was young Alison Samson (fresh from heaps of events at the finale of the College Athletics League held at Newtown Park over the last three weeks) with a time of 30:11. Second place went to Terri Grimmett in 33:01 with Leeane Palmer taking third in 34:43.

Runners: Fastest around the 5k course tonight was Hayden Shearman after forging to the lead within 200m of the start and that's where he stayed. His time was 17:01 and there was a way back to Darryl Robinson who took second place with a time of 17:43. Third went to Chris Martin, just a few seconds back in 17:46. Fastest woman tonight was Natalie Smith, in her first serious run back after the 2007 NZ Road Relay Champs. Natalie posted 19 minutes flat to take first place with young Florence Reynolds sprinting home for second place - in a head-to-head battle with one of our maturer competitors Brian Hayes - with her time being 19:30. Third place went to Carline Thomas in 19:52 which shaved a few seconds off her season’s best time.

Several other season's PBs were recorded tonight, which was a great effort given the conditions and I note Neil Stodart recorded a personal best effort (as well as taking home a Hog Wine of the Week to help celebrate) and so well done, Neil. Rebecca Speirs made it a perfect night for their household in claiming the Lifestyle Sports weekly $50 discount voucher – after a redraw was necessary. Tracey Christiansen clipped a huge three minutes off her previous best time this series.

Thanks to the regular Scottish officials for administering this evening’s race – Todd Stevens and starter Dan Powell plus Bruce and Noeline Perry with Christine Jones marshalling the turnaround point for us.

Thanks again to the Loaded Hog for sponsor's product as prizes and for the complimentary beverages afterwards. Next week, it looks as if we shall have the privilege of two Hog staff members joining us for the race – safe training, Gabbie and James.

A REMINDER: Series Two, Summer 2007/08 – Races start at later times due to daylight savings. Registrations from 5:30pm; walkers start 5:45pm; runners start 6:00pm
