Loaded Hog 5k Race, Summer Series, Race 5, Queens Wharf, 6 November 2007

There was a coldish southerly out on the Wellington waterfront as the race commenced tonight, but it died a little shortly afterwards allowing many to sail home for personal PBs or series PBs, at least. Some 67 participants competed Efficiently on the Loaded Hog course on Melbourne Cup night.

Walkers:  Fastest woman tonight was young Alison Samson with a time of 31:42. Second place went to Terri Grimmett just a small distance back in 31:54 with Hannah Minot taking third placed woman with a time of 36:21. Fastest man tonight was Johnny Hines, next home was Bart Jones with a series PB time of 34:13 and third was Robert Bennett in 38:21.

Runners: Grant McLean returned to the Hog 5k after his (what would seem) endless marathon assaults to post a solid time of 16:07 for fastest runner tonight. Nearly a minute back in second was Brian Garmonsway who posted 17:05 and just snatching third was Mark Te Punga in a time of 17:18. Fastest woman tonight was our new international guest (for a year at least) in Marjolein Ros who improved on her first week’s time to post a good time of 20:16. Second home went to Pam Graham who put in a top run under 21 minutes – posting 20:50 and third went to Christine Carleton who was just a tick over 21 minutes in 21:01.

As mentioned earlier, great to see so many season PBs as well as a handful of other notable personal achievements tonight. Simon Maister, who is just 10 days away from his Everest Marathon Challenge sliced 20s off his lifetime PB. He put this down to his simulated altitude training - and it’s all legal as well so much better than nasty drugs - Jeremy Pitt, Dean Riley and Chris Leatham all smashed their lifetime PBs as did Rebecca Speirs and Neil Stodart. They stated they just started speed training on Sunday – so that’s great payback and so quickly too! Peter McCorkindale and Ian Fry were two others to also post personal best times. If I missed your PB performance – sorry, but congratulations to all on tonight’s effort. Elise McErlean and Lisa Sara – new registrants to the series last week – both shaved over a minute off last week’s first ever time – well done girls. Keep it up – you’re doing well. You’ll be up with DJ Laird in no time.

Thanks to the regular Scottish officials for administering this evening’s race – and thanks also to Diane Morgan for organizing the Scottish master’s women to help officiate tonight’s race - with Diane, Loretta Desourdy, Andrena Patterson and Christine Jones at the turnaround.

Thanks also to Alison Samson, my prize-giving assistant tonight as well as guest selector of the weekly Loaded Hog spot prizes. All were well received, it would seem.

Thanks again to the Loaded Hog for sponsor's product as prizes and for the complimentary beverages afterwards. Sadly, we didn’t have the privilege of our two Hog staff members joining us for the race – Gabbie and James - we expect to see you in your running gear next week (without fail).

A REMINDER: Series Two, Summer 2007/08 – Races start at later times due to daylight saving. Registrations from 5:30pm; walkers start 5:45pm; runners start 6:00pm
