Loaded Hog 5k Race, Summer Series, Race 7, Queens Wharf, 27 November 2007

As I promised in my e-mail reminder, there was a mild southerly tonight out on the Wellington waterfront, which did assist many of the 80 participants to gain season’s PBs and a few lifetime PBs. Obviously, the fortnightly break from the Loaded Hog 5k races did not affect these athletes.

Walkers:  Fastest around the course tonight was Tony Burrell who scooted 5k in 30:07. Second man was John Leonard in 32:37 which I think was a PB for John – well done! Third place went to Johnny Hines in 33:09. Fastest woman was Leeane Palmer who posted 34:54 tonight with Carol Brieseman just behind her in 35:05 and just a few more seconds back was Hannah Minot for third in 35:17. So a very close race all round for the ladies.

Runners: Grant McLean returned to the Hog 5k series and won as he liked in a time of 16:28. Next home was Hayden Shearman in a time of 16:35 (just a touch outside his best) and third went to Jeremy Boyd who ran 16:57. Brian Garmonsway was inches behind in 4th place. Tina Harris also returned tonight to record a very solid 18:21 as she builds up for her personal challenge to break 18 minutes and crack the 17min something mark. Based upon Tina’s rapid improvement over the past 12 months (and with a talented new personal coach), I have no doubt she will succeed. Another success was tonight’s second place-getter Heather Walker. She smashed her season’s PB in recording 18:42 and is another who will no doubt continue to improve as she returns to racing with renewed enthusiasm. Third place went to our newest Scottish member – Marjolein Ros, as she posted the magical 20 minutes even. I have no doubt it will be 19min something next time she races.

Congratulations also go to Dean Riley, Chris Leatham and Peter McCorkindale as they all recorded lifetime PBs in tonight’s race – well done guys! I also noted Peter Plowman ran a huge season's PB – perhaps even a personal PB and many others like Karen Gillespie, Christy Lyons, Damon Peachey and Alex Harrington all made significant time improvements in this evening's race.

Thanks to the regular Scottish officials for administering this evening’s race – and thanks also to Venessa Green and Rohan Biggs for their valuable assistance.

One other significant fact about this evening's race – under the influence (all voluntary of course) of Wellington Scottish's General Manager – Todd Stevens - we have an ever-increasing group of participants from Price Waterhouse Cooper, which reached at least a dozen in numbers tonight. The camaraderie and healthy personal rivalry was clearly evident as was the fact they were all enjoying themselves – whilst invariably running faster and faster as each week goes by. The fact that large number have greater chances to score Hog spot prizes is an added benefit that many others were envious of. I trust you all enjoyed your meal and drinks tonight – mostly courtesy of the Loaded Hog no doubt.

A REMINDER: Races from here on in will be on a fortnightly basis as we share the Waterfront with Olympic Harriers who operate the Mizuno 5k series on a Tuesday evening - same times. Next race is Tuesday, 11 December 2008 - Registrations from 5:30pm; walkers start 5:45pm; runners start 6:00pm.

AN INVITATION:  If any of you choose to do so, please feel free to join me at Newtown Park track on the alternate Tuesday evenings (from 20 November 2007 with a prompt 6pm start - all warmed up) for a session of exercises, drills, stride-outs and repetition runs – all designed to help you run faster. If you don’t receive an e-mail from me and wish to know more – e-mail me
