Loaded Hog 5k Race, Summer Series, Race 8, Queens Wharf, 11 December 2007

Another near-perfect night out on the Wellington waterfront, which helped many of the 77 participants to go close to or gain season’s PBs and a couple of lifetime PBs as well. If I missed out recording a PB – so sorry, it was a rather hectic night all round, what with traffic jams, busy pavements, rushed bar staff and obviously just getting far too close to Christmas.

Walkers:  Just a handful of walkers tonight and fastest around the course was Carol Brieseman who recorded a season’s PB of 34:50. Next home was Leeane Palmer in a time of 35:28 and then Robert Bennett came in next with 37:37. Crossing the line together were Daphne and Bart Jones – both posting 39:10.

Runners: Jamie White (Scottish) returned to the Hog 5k series to win this evening’s race in a time of 17:06. Not far away and next home was Rob Anderson who posted 17:10 and taking third was our regular Hutt Valley athlete Brian Garmonsway who this week seemed to take it somewhat easier in the early stages and still posted 17:25 for third. Fastest woman was Gabby O’Rourke who returned to racing with a sub-18-minute time of 17:57. Daylight was next but second placing went to another returning runner in Jenny McDonald who recorded a series best time of 19:13 and third went to Aubrey Begley who returned to the 5k road course in 19:33. I seem to recall that late last month Aubrey ran the fastest time of all women competitors in the Molesworth Half Marathon Run (gravel and dusty roads) in 1:33 – so speed and endurance do go hand in hand.

Congratulations to the 23 participants I have noted as recording series PBs tonight. If they were actual lifetime PBs – well done! Sorry I missed recording them as such. I’m afraid my database is limited so sometimes I need you to tell me. I do know that Edward Sargisson shaved a couple of seconds off his lifetime PB tonight and Phillip Grimmett ran a 5k PB as well.

Thanks to the Scottish helpers tonight – not many actually but it was great to have Natalie Smith and Don Dalgliesh on hand to help starter Dan and Todd. Thanks also to Karen Jenkinson, Rohan Biggs and Karl Woodhead for helping at registrations before their races.

A REMINDER: That was the last Loaded Hog 5k for 2007 – Our next 5k race is on Tuesday, 15 January 2008 and from there on in - on a fortnightly basis as we share the waterfront with Olympic Harriers who operate the Mizuno 5k series on alternate Tuesday evenings – we both have the same details - Registrations from 5:30pm; walkers start 5:45pm; runners start 6:00pm.

AN INVITATION:  If any of you choose to do so, please feel free to join me at Newtown Park track on the alternate Tuesday evenings (yes we are on for Tuesday 18 December 2007 with a prompt 6pm start - all warmed up) for a session of exercises, drills, stride-outs and repetition runs – all designed to help you run faster. If you haven’t receive an e-mail from me and wish to know more – e-mail me
