Loaded Hog 5k Race, Summer Series, Race 9, Queens Wharf, 15 January 2008

It was a great turnout for the first Loaded Hog 5k race in 2008 with 88 finishers. No fewer than 27 new registrations this evening and it sounded like a few New Year’s resolutions had prompted a few - well done! The weather was mild with a light northerly but also quite humid so it was hot work out on the waterfront course.

Walkers: Just a handful of walkers tonight and fastest around the course was Mike Lane who posted a tick over 31 minutes with 31:01. Second male home, recording a SPB was Phillip Grimmett with a time of 32:26 and third went to Johnny Hines in 33:46. Fastest woman tonight was Terri Grimmett who walked the 5k in 32:41 with second going to Frances Le Fort in 35:14 and third was Hannah Minot with a time of 35:56.

Runners: Hutt Valley athlete Brian Garmonsway took line honours for the first race in 2008 with a time of 17:09. Just 2 seconds adrift was Scottish’s Jay Macilquham with 17:11 and Jason Waite was not far away in third with a time of 17:20. Hutt Valley made it a double tonight when Katie Fenton ran the fastest women’s time tonight in 18:37. Second home was Scottish’s Lotty Turnidge with a solid time of 19:01 (on the comeback trail from having her first child) and third went to Marjolein Ros with another time around the 20-minute mark in 20:09. Incidentally, welcome back to Suzanne Cookson, our international runner in Belgrave Harriers strip, who has returned to New Zealand after a couple of years in the UK.

Personal bests were recorded by Rebecca Speirs (a huge drop of 31 seconds); Peter Curry (13 seconds); Ian Fay (12 seconds); Ed Sargisson (4 seconds) & Mark Hiess (2 seconds) by my calculations - Congratulations to all of you – clearly you went easy on the Xmas pudding and trifle. Season’s PBs were recorded by 12 other participants with most notable performances by Lisa Sara (a huge 2:19 improvement); Richard Brent (shaking injury problems to improve by 1:39); Loasa Kosena (44s and breaking through that magical 20 minute barrier) and Belinda Buck (29s after doing some great workouts at Newtown Park reps sessions on Tuesday evenings). Well done everyone and I’m sorry if some of the SPBs were actually lifetime PBs .Please let me know as I don’t have everyone’s details I’m afraid.

Thanks to Dan Powell (starter extraordinaire); Bruce and Noeleen Perry and Rohan Biggs (resting up he tells me after a half marathon training run at lunch time in a humble 1:22 – just a training dawdle, he says. Watch out for a sub 2:40 his next assault of a marathon course.

I hope you all enjoyed the run, the complimentary beverages courtesy of our race sponsors – The Loaded Hog. We’ll see you all in 2 weeks on Tuesday, 29 January 2008. Same time same place of course.

AN INVITATION:  If any of you choose to do so, please feel free to join me at Newtown Park track on the alternate Tuesday evenings (yes, we are on for Tuesday, 22 January 2008, with a prompt 6pm start - all warmed up) for a session of exercises, drills, stride-outs and repetition runs – all designed to help you run faster. If you haven’t received an e-mail from me and wish to know more – e-mail me
