Calling all social or competitive runners and walkers: Come on down to the Wellington Waterfront every Tuesday from 4 August for our 5k fun run and walk series. With new sponsors, an improved format, and fantastic prizes, the Brooks Waterfront 5k series will start on Tuesday 4 August 2009 and runs weekly thereafter until April. This is a significant opportunity for any runner or walker to get fit in preparation for summer (yes, summer is coming we hope!). Poster

Win a Tour Leader’s Jersey!

NightLife T NightLife T NightLife T NightLife TNightLife TNightLife TNightLife T
For the first time a Tour Leader’s Jersey is up for grabs. A Brooks NightLife fluro T-shirt will go to the male and female series leader, judged on points.
Each event in the series points are up for grabs culminating in inaugural series champions being crowned at the final event prize giving in April 2010. Men’s and women’s running and walking series champions will be crowned. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third in each category.

Each new men’s and women’s running and walking series leader will win a Brooks NightLife fluro T-shirt signifying their current or previous tour lead (you can only win one of these). Wear it with pride for the remainder of the series. You don’t have to be a whippet to take the series lead or win the series – consistent participation will see most feature. The first 44 competitors in each event score points towards the series. Points for each race are: 1st  50 points, 2nd 45 points, 3rd 42 points, 4th 41 points. 5th 40 points continuing to zero. Test yourself: can you lead the Tour?

The popular Loaded Hog 5k "Summer" Series began its weekly version on Tuesday, 9 October and winds up on 26 February for a dozen races in total. From mid-November the frequency drops back to fortnightly and the alternate weeks filled in with the Olympic Twilight 5k series.  Registration opens at around 5:30 at the waterfront Loaded Hog. Entry fee of $6 gets you a race to compete in, a complimentary Loaded Hog beverage at the prize-giving in the bar, a chance to pick up a spot prize and share some scintillating conversation. Walkers start at 5:45, runners at 6:00. The start is beside Ferg's Kayaks and the course heads out past Te Papa, down to Cable St, past the New World, around to Oriental Parade footpath to the cone (near the bus stop, about 200m beyond the end of the beach) and returns the same way. When you cross the finish line, please stay in finishing order until we record your number. Toilets are available on the wharf or in the Loaded Hog. This is a great chance to do regular racing, time trials, or tempo runs. You may want to put up the following poster in your workplace, gym, etc. Poster with details

History of the 5k series

We began these 5k series in the spring of 2000 (August and September), with a double loop course around Thorndon.  In those days the name sponsor was Magills (a now defunct pub on Thorndon Quay).  The idea of the spring series was to get people ready for road racing (such as the road relays).  This course required lots of marshalls because of all the road crossings.  In the autumn, we changed to course to a single out-and-back along the Old Hutt Road - no road crossings.  The idea of the timing was to get people endurance-fit for winter sports (including harriers!).

That's the way it stayed for several years, except we moved the start out to the end of the retail area (beside the paint shop) to provide a wider footpath with fewer vehicles crossing.

After Magills folded, Bodyworks took up the name sponsorship for a season. In Autumn 2005, we moved to the waterfront and a new name sponsor (Lifestyle Sports, who still remain as a sponsor) with a course around the Overseas Passenger Terminal and out to Oriental Bay and straight back, starting from the brewery on Taranaki Wharf.  Then in August 2005, we began a longer Spring series under the name sponsorship of the Loaded Hog, an out-and-back course to the end of Oriental Bay starting from outside the kayak and climbing store. The Loaded Hog also provides a congenial location after the race to hold a prize giving and relax while rehydrating.
