Harveys Real Estate 19th North Island Cross Country Championships, Spa Park, 1 July 2006

As they do in Taupo, the day dawned frosty but gave way to sunshine for the cross-country. In beautiful conditions, just under 40 Scottish runners (and three affiliates) participated in this event. Podium performances came from Tim Hodge (1M19), Michele Allison (3W45) (who popped in from a family ski trip to run), and Phil Sadgrove (2M45).  Glenn Hughes put in a strong performance in the men's race for fourth.

Tim tucked in behind Jake Robinson of Hamilton City Hawks for most of the 5k, but kicked ahead behind the bush in the final turn and won by 20m. Scottish senior women outnumbered their male counterparts and that must be a first. Pam Graham and Ken Howell were officially present (and, what's more, are even recorded in the results - 5W45 and 58M45).

Both mornings produced light frosts and clear views of the volcanoes to the south. The traditional Sunday morning run saw most members running to turning points somewhere between the falls and the dam along a foggy trail.  Brenda and Paul spent 15 minutes lying in the hot water stream at the foot of Spa Park at the end of their trail run (thank goodness for the fog).

Top club was Pakuranga, as usual, with Olympic Harriers second.  Wellington won the centre prize, also as usual.

Thanks to Jim Kerr for organising the trip.

The photo shows Ben Ruthe, formerly of Scottish but now running for Tauranga Ramblers, winning the senior men’s 9k race. More of Rowan Greig's photos can eventually be found here.
