National Road Relay Championships, Feilding, 4 October 2003

Photos by Rowan Greig

Here are are some photos from the finish. Unfortunately the difficulty in getting to Feilding because of bad weather and road closures meant that I didn't get to see anything other than the end of the race.

Anyway for what it's worth, I offer photos from the different grades and included a few shots which convey the creative/light hearted side of the event, which, for some, is nothing but a deadly serious event.  The juniors were great and I think the shot of Tim Hodge bringing it home with the touch of the hand from a team mate sums up the spirit and excitement of relays. The Bays Cougar shot where the last runner (Stu Kerr) flicks his gloved hand to the rest of his team to confirm that the desperately sought victory is in the bag, contrasts to that of Stu Barr and Blair Martin who, having done their best, are resigned to the fact that this is not their day, but can still appreciate each other's efforts.

Some of the other shots also show the support from team mates -  glimpses captured in a nanosecond but which probably mirror what was going on for the whole race on different parts of the course.  And finally the shots of the Valleys Team with their very own designer skirts and batons, plus the cohort of Hamilton Hawks Masters Women approaching the finish line like a menacing bunch of painted Celts (to the bemusement of Lyndale's Leyton Tremain).

I am disappointed at not being able to follow the relay but was better off than those poor residents of Paekakariki who were blasted by the storm on Friday night. Nelson is next year and Nick Lovell (ex Scottish now Tasman Tigers) has promised me warm and sunny weather with an extended course!
