66th Takahe to Akaroa Road Relay/The Frontrunner 29th New Zealand Road Relay, 1 October 2005

With a gold and two silvers in the championship grades, Scottish again won the Top Club award. The Senior Women's A team defended their title against a strong challenge from Wellington Harriers with a 91-second margin. The Senior Men's A team was second to Bays Cougars (with a 4:38 margin), while the Junior Men's A team was 86 seconds behind Wesley.

The Masters Women's A team were coming second at the start of lap 4 when their runner collapsed two thirds of the way through lap 4. Jane Baxter was ambulanced to hospital and Jenny McDonald took over for the remainder of her lap after a delay of six minutes and then ran her own lap (in the fastest W35 time). Jane has recovered well. Despite the delays, the team went on to record the second fastest time for the grade, but the rules state that a team with a replacement runner is not eligible for a team award or a team placing. Well done to Diane Morgan and other members of the women's team (and the coach of the Southern Stars) for giving Jane first aid and getting the ambulance there quickly.

The Senior Women's B team recorded fifth place in the SW grade (and incidentally finished ahead of the Scottish M50 team by 16 seconds). Two lap records were set by Scottish runners: one by Melissa Moon on lap 8 as a W35, the other by Terefe Ejigu on lap 4 as an M19 (fastest over all grades). Tim Hodge also broke the M19 record for lap 3 with a time of 31:19 for 10k, but Hawks' Jake Robertson set a new record one and a half minutes after Tim (with 31:08).

Conditions were overcast, with a slight north-westerly - excellent conditions overall. Club Patron Alan Stevens first attended the Akaroa Road Relay 50 years ago. This year, 92 people ran in 12 teams for Scottish. The senior laps are 9.6/10.4/10.0/9.1/11.1/6.9/9.6/9.9=76.6, while the junior race has laps 4.8/5.7/10.0/9.1/7.0/4.1=40.7. Some of the finishers in the counts below were DQd or otherwise made ineligible for placing.
