Athletics NZ Union Cross Country Championships, Agricultural and Pastoral Showgrounds, Hastings, 7 August 2004

Some triumphs for Scottish and the Wellington Centre, but also some disappointments. Terefe Ejigu won the men 16 years and under grade, while Rees Buck, barely off the plane from his northern hemisphere track season, came second in the senior men, to a rampant Phil Costley (New Brighton), who led the field for most of the 12k.

Michele Allison was first in her 5-year masters grade and sixth masters woman overall, while Ben Christophers came an excellent 8th in the men 19 and under grade. Tessa Hunt also put in a great performance with a sixth place in the W16 grade, dead-heating with Melanie Cleland of Valleys.

The course was a 2k loop starting on the race flat show grounds, flowing over a stop bank, and then switching back and forth over undulating ground before returning to the flat area. The grass was firm under foot. Runners reported the course as fast and demanding.  Conditions around the middle of the day were hot and relatively still, but cooling and with a stronger westerly later in the day.

This year the centre teams competition was given new emphasis. Wellington Centre was: second in the W16/W19 combined grade (with Tessa Hunt contributing there as fourth runner); first in the masters women (Michele Allison second runner); first in the M16/M19 grade (Terefe Ejigu as first runner); 2nd M35; 4th M50+; and first in SM where Scottish contributed most of the team (Rees Buck; Jason Cressingham (WHAC) , Nick Buck, Mike Wakelin (Olympic), Ben Revell and James Coubrough).
