National Road Relays, Feilding, 7 October 2006
Scottish harvested a first in the master's women, a second in the senior men and a third in the men 19 grade at the New Zealand road relay championships. Scottish took second in all the open men's grade subdivisions and was second in the race walk relay. Scottish was fourth in the men's 40-49 grade, after being pipped in the last lap by Wellington Harriers, and fourth in the senior women. Overall, Scottish shared the top club award with Wellington Harriers. Scottish had 20 teams, running and walking, at Feilding. Controversy reigned in the short-course race when many of the second wave teams left the course in the third leg, causing a spate of protests. The short-course results below are based on the total time for laps 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 (so just 32.3k). The top club results are based on places using this set of results. The gold medal Anne Hare won in the relay was Anne's 50th ANZ National medal in 30 years of competing in athletics: 19 gold, 14 silver and 17 bronze covering track and field, cross country, road and road relays. Phil Costley has attained this feat but we're not sure if any other NZ female athletes have. In the open grade, double honours went to the North Harbour Bays who collected both the senior men and senior women titles. Going into the final of seven laps, in the senior men Dino Bozzone had an eight second lead over Scottish's Ben Revell. However, after initially losing some ground, Bozzone pulled away over the final 2k to win by 38 seconds. Bays were in fourth after the first lap, dropped to sixth on lap two, but an outstanding run by Dale Warrander who set a new race record of 30m 27s for the 9.78k third lap, had Bays into second. Glenn Hughes led Scottish through by a narrow margin of three seconds, handing over to Scott Ferguson. Scottish held a two-second advantage going into the 9.7k fifth stage. Matt Dravitzki took half a minute out of Bays Blair Jordan to put Scottish out to a 25 second lead over Tauranga's Mark McKeown. Jason Cameron hauled Bays into the lead on lap six. Bays covered the 67.5k in 3h 35m 36s. Warrander said that he had a bit of work to do to bring Bays back into it. "I went out to pull in as many guys as I could, and make a race of it for the team. "It was a good team effort, we went in as underdogs, Scottish were the favourites, everyone stepped up and ran well," said Warrander. Cameron said it was the most satisfying win for Bays, in taking their ninth senior men's title. "We had to really work for that," said Cameron. Revell said he made a move early on in the last lap. "I made a couple of attempts to reel back the gap, but it was a good run from Dino," said Revell. "It was awesome to have three teams together, it made a great race," he added. Tauranga were third. An outstanding lap was put up by Pakuranga's Mark Bowyer, who carved over two minutes off the fifth lap record scorching over the 9.7k in 28m 52s.
Lake City of Rotorua beat defending champions Auckland University in the masters men 40-49. Auckland University, however, collected the masters men over 50. The junior men went to Nelson, the junior women to Wellington Harrier and the masters women to Wellington Scottish. Tim Hodge and Terefe Ejigu set lap records in the short course. Our top walking team (Peter Baillie, Mark Woodhouse, Simon Reynolds, James Hurring, Amelia De Lorenzo and Maria Knott) was second. After his first lap contribution, Peter Baillie went mufti and walked the remainder of the course. The overall club competition was jointly awarded to Wellington Scottish and Wellington Harriers with Hamilton City Hawks third. This is based on the top three placings across the running grades. - Report based on Athletics NZ release At the dinner were two thirds of the Scottish members who competed in the relay championship earlier in the day. The dinner was judged a roaring success by attendees. Special thanks to the division captains for organising teams (Rebecca Grainger, Bob Stephens, Don Dalgliesh and Todd Stevens) and to Todd Stevens for the immense job of organising the away trip. Scottish results Leg 3 (short course) has been deleted from the aggregate time to determine places. The ave min/k for that lap may not mean much as various people ran different lengths. The walking race started 1 min 27 sec late and so the first laps and the totals are overstated by this much. Please help me by emailing your correct team order Feedback. Lap lengths for the long course are 9.410, 10.163, 9.781, 9.709, 9.707, 9.549, 9.148. For the short course, 6.535, 7.091, 5.944 (officially, anyway), 7.147, 7.255, 4.295.
