Weather wise the day could not have
been better for racing, Upper Hutt graced us with a typical winter day, clear,
sunny and windless but very cold early on.
Courtney Ruske and supporter John Hinton
from Christchurch flew in and Bob Gardner brought them up to Trentham,
fortunately they were able to wait in the warmth of Trentham Camp Golf Club
until everyone else arrived. Courtney
came up to crack the 10km Under 20 record of 50:15:56 set by Kate Newitt in
After a slightly fraught week Peter
Wrigley & David Cooke managed to get enough graded Athletics New Zealand
race officials so we could meet the requirements for a record application.
There were 17 starters overall, with
Courtney setting a cracking pace. We all
had the pleasure of being passed at least once by Courtney, being passed is a
novelty for Peter Baillie, a few of us were passed 3 times. Terri and Kevin gained ground on a slowing John,
passing him in lap 5, Kevin hung onto Terri but didn’t quite have the finishing
sprint and Chris managed to keep in front of Barb and hold off her push in lap
5 to finish in front.
We had some consistent results, but
unfortunately no PB’s other than Courtney’s blistering 49:29 taking 46 seconds
off the record, yah hoo
Unfortunately Peter Tearle did
1:28:01 (88 minutes) one second over his age of 88.
