Upcoming events

Bays Relay, 17 August, Island Bay, 12.30pm

  • The Bays Relay is a road relay that starts at Island Bay and goes around the Mirimar Pennisula to Kilbirnie. Each leg is between 4 and 5 kilometres long. If you want to take part contact your team captain to be in a team. If you can’t run please consider volunteering as a marshall – WHAC needs a significant number of marshalls to keep the course safe as we are running on open roads. The first race is at 12.30 for Women under 20, Senior Women, Masters Women (35+), Masters Women (50+) and Masters Men (60+). The second race is at 1.00pm for Men under 20, Senior Men, Masters Men (35+) and Masters Men (50+). More info.

Turkey Trot, 17 August, Island Bay, 10.30am

  • Wellington Harrier Athletic Club’s Turkey Trot (10.30am) is walked in conjunction with the Bays Relay, on Saturday 17 August 2019. Walkers estimate their time for the distance (5 km) and results are decided on how close they finish to their estimate. The catch is that nobody is allowed to wear a watch or receive sideline advice on their progress times. More info.

Frenzy Relay, 17 August, Owhiro Bay, 12.30pm

  • This is a fun event for any primary or intermediate school age runners. There will be school teams, groups of friends and running club teams. Each team has four runners and at least one girl. Parents, siblings, friends, anyone can enter.
  • Race headquarters is the Te Kopahou centre at Owhiro Bay. There is an undercover area in case of rain with toilets, and water available.
  • Entries will be taken from 12.30pm. There is no need to pre-enter and the entry fee has been scrapped, but please email Tom if you have a team, so we have an idea of the numbers. If you don’t have a team, don’t worry, we can find one for you on the day. The course is approximately 1km and covers soft sand, undulations, and natural obstacles such as found logs and a small rock wall.
  • If parents or other adults are able to help with the event please let Tom know.

Wellington Road Running Champs 24 August, Wainuiomata

  • The Wellington Road Champs is the last of the four big interclub races for the year. It is a great opportunity to run a fast 5km or 10km time with a large pack of runners to pull you along. It is held in the Wainuiomata Recreation Area. Enter from Moores Valley Road and turn into Whitcher Grove which leads to Reservoir Road. The course is an out and back road race using a 1.25km stretch of road that is closed to public traffic. There is a hill on one side and a river on the other side. The course is largely sheltered from the wind. The 5km race is at 12.40pm and the 10km race is at 2.45pm, with the shorter children’s and junior races in-between those two. More info and course map

Wellington Road Walking Champs, 24 August, 9.30am, Te Marua

  • The Athletics Wellington Race Walking Championships will be held on a new course on the Twin Lakes access road at Te Marua, Upper Hutt. Wellington Scottish Athletics and Trentham United clubs are jointly hosting the meeting. The races include an A division fully judged 5km and 10km races, and a B division scrutinised race over 5km and 10km.
  • Full details can be found here.

3x3km Cannons Creek Ekiden, 7 September, 2pm

  • Time for some relay practice! This is a new event on our calendar. This three-person relay is run on the same park as the Bothamley Park Run. The course is a 3km out and back leg that each of three team members race. You turn up on the day and I will add you to a team (similar to how we did for the McVilly Shield at Karori Park at the start of the year). Meet beforehand at Corinna School.

NZ Road Relays, Feilding, 4-6 October

  • So far we have 93 people registered. The New Zealand Road Relays are the highlight of the year and this year they are in Feilding on 5 October. Scottish organises transport to and from Feilding/Palmerston North and around the race, race entry, accommodation and dinner on Saturday night. We subsidise the cost for everyone. So that you pay a flat fee of $190 if you are competing or $150 if you are a supporter. Notices

  • Welcome to new club member Gregor Coster!
  • We are sad to report the death of Brian Derwin last week, in his 89th year. In 1949 he won the NZ Junior Cross Country Championships at Havelock North, competing for Hawkes Bay/Poverty Bay. Thanks to the persuasion of some senior Scottish men present he was convinced to move to Wellington – and our club. He was Scottish Senior Champion a record seven times from 1951 and Wellington Centre Champion three times from 1950 plus he won many other interclub titles, representing Wellington in the NZ Cross Country Champs eight times with high placings. He was club captain 1957-61. He was a very successful coach – especially to Roger Wyatt who was the NZ junior mile titleholder and cross country country champion in 1959 and Grant Wheeler who was Wellington senior cross country champion in 1964 and represented New Zealand at World Cross Country in 1965 and 1967. In 1965 Brian masterminded our successful win in the Wellington-Masterton Relay in record time – breaking the record held by the star-studded Owairaka team! He also served for ten years from 1970 on the NZAAA (now Athletics New Zealand) Management Committee. Scottish was well represented at his funeral – especially by Michael Browne and Graeme Stevens who were also in the Wellington junior team at the NZXC Champs in 1949.
  • There is a lot of fun and satisfaction in being an official at athletics meets. It is great seeing athletes in action up close and satisfying to know that you have helped to ensure that the competition is held in accordance with best practice. Athletics Wellington needs new officials to help supplement our existing numbers. In particular, it needs additional officials for the NZSSAA championships that are being held at Newtown Park on 6-8 December. To help develop new officials, it has scheduled four training seminars in August and September. These training sessions are suitable for all-comers. Details of the training seminars, including dates, topics, venues and contact details are on this website: http://athleticswellington.org.nz/officials/
  • Wellington City Council is upgrading reservoir pipelines near our clubrooms. This means significant traffic disruptions to streets surrounding the Scottish Clubrooms – including to Wright Street, Wallace Street, Hargraves Street and Hutchison Street. For any club events at the Clubrooms be aware that driving and parking may be difficult. For more details see this update from Wellington Water.
