SCOTTISH RESULTS

Scottish Three Peaks, Event Two: "The Classic" 24 June 2001

It was deja vu, late May all over again: a threatening southerly, random rain, frozen hill monitors. But despite the dodgy weather, 36 fronted up for the Polhill-wind turbine)/Mt Kaukau/Mt Victoria peak experience.

Greg Thurlow was the first back after visiting all three peaks in just over two and a half hours. At the other end of the spectrum, JD Dallas did the trip in a shade over four hours. Youngest visitor to the wind turbine was 12-year-old Ceallaigh Rodway, while newly minted vet Leah Karu (happy birthday!) played with the three-peak concept, by dropping two of the designated peaks and including Mt Albert instead. Fastest visitors to Mt Vic and Polhill were Angus Napier and Ian Murray in two and a half hours.

Winner of one of the spot prizes, a voucher for goods from Featherston Pharmacy, was Richard Sweetman. Our thanks also to Featherston Pharmacy for supplying the recovery drink. The second prize, a membership at Les Mills, went to Karl Woodhead.

Thanks to organiser Harry Doig, who worked out the results and refuelled the participants back in the kitchen, Ken Howell and Brian Cattermole, keepers of the start and finish times at basecamp, and our three hill monitors, John Turner (Polhill), Bob Gardner (Mt Vic) and Peter Maunder (Mt Kaukau).

Event Three: "The Beast" covers the Hawkins Hill - Radar Station/Tinakori/Mt Crawford and will take place in fine weather on Sunday, 29 July 2001, from 8am.
