Wellington Three Peaks Event Two ("Southeast Special" - Mt Crawford, Ataturk Memorial, South Headland), 17 June 2007

By Richard Brent

Despite a cold, wet and windy day, 95 hardy souls turned out and an impressive 75 completed all three peaks. The weather appeared to improve for a while, and some starters delayed their start hoping to enjoy improved conditions, but unfortunately it deteriorated to steady rain for a couple of hours before clearing up around midday!

First runners home were Ross Morrison and Rees Buck in 1:48. Jacinda Papps was first woman, in 1.57, followed by Brenda Lavin in 1:59 and Robyn Holland in 2:00. In the battle for the overall Three Peaks Championship (over all nine peaks) after two events Ross and Jacinda have very handy leads, but anything could happen in the last event.

While the peaks were not too challenging from a mountain-running perspective, there were good gains to be made for those who researched their routes. The quickest apparent route on a street map often hides an unnecessary loss of altitude, as some of the organisers found to their cost when trialling the peaks the week before.

Thanks especially to the helpers, Peter Pohl at South Headland, Pip Mitchell and Jane Baxter at Ataturk Memorial and Emma Brooks at Mt Crawford, Bob Russell, Lotty and Brett Turnidge, Chris Harp, Diane Morgan, and Andrena Paterson at home base (and especially for Andrena’s hot scone production line), and David Colquhoun for setting the whole event up.

Thanks also to our sponsors: Bivouac Outdoor for the best outdoor clothing in Wellington, Lifestyle Sports out at Dressmart in Tawa for good cheap running shoes, and Lake Autos Petone/Repco Petone for your car servicing. Thanks also to the Parks Department of Wellington City Council who have been very helpful.

The last event in the series is the “Northern special” – Mt Victoria, Mt Kaukau, and the Tinakori Hill radio mast, on 29 July. It is the longest of the three. See you all there.
