Three Peaks, 3x3 Mountain Challenge: Event 3: The Teaser, 28 July 2002

Again we had the choice bit of the day, with drizzle moving in after the run. 46 took up the third and final challenge.

First triple peakers home were Angus Napier and Conal McKenna. For the triplers, the favoured peak order was predominantly Wrights/Kopahou/Albert (19 out of 23), keeping the potential energy gained via Wrights by trekking along the edge of the Karori Sanctuary, and then running the ridge through Hawkins Hill and Te Kopahou. This allowed a descent of the Tip Track (which is far preferable to ascending it!).

Howard Harman, today's zero peaker, almost made it to Mt Albert, but joined a group heading to Te Kopahou via Red Rocks. Then he had to cut his run short to catch a plane to Christchurch for his daughter's wedding.

Why did you call this "The Teaser"? I asked the organiser, Harry Doig, on top of Te Kopahou, as he sheltered in the lee of his station wagon from the howling southerly. His rapidly improvised answer: Not many people know the Te Kopahou area and this run be a taste of what the area has to offer.

Personally, I spent a fair chunk of time exploring the Te Kopahou Reserve (as did Phil Cameron), after discovering to my dismay that I had taken the wrong ridge up from Red Rocks and getting out of that mess would require a drop in elevation practically to sea level again and then zig-zag climbing up to the 485m Te Kopahou peak.

The P Team insisted that when they had abandoned Bruce Lake on Mt Albert, he was a broken man. Bruce appeared, however, to recover quite quickly on his return, only a couple of minutes behind his P Teammates, once he had taken a couple of energy drinks.

Spot prizes: Matyas James, and Roger Shelton who won Lifestyle Sports vouchers; Ian Murray won the stop watch spot prize open to runners participating in all three events this year. The other sponsor was Red Bull, restoring energy levels at the end.

Thanks to the peak monitors, Wrights (Charles Broad), Te Kopahou (Harry Doig) and Albert (Bob Gardner); to the keepers of homebase, Harry Doig (at the start and compiler of the results), Gordon Walker, Ceallaigh and Tristan Rodway.

Thanks to all the participants. See you again next year.                                                      Paul
