Three Peaks Event Two (Makara/Polhill/Tinakori), 22 June 2003

Forty six fronted for the second peak experience of the year. They divided into two camps: those who prefer the roads (will do trails, if it can't be helped) and those carrying orienteering maps, talking about bushwacking new trails and ridges. These latter returned to the clubhouse generally covered in gorse scratches and blood. Otherwise, good conditions for a long Sunday run.

This seemed to be the triple peak event for the stories. How did Todd and Glenn manage to generate a two-hour run out of going just to the Windmill? How Geoff McElrea just flew down the mountain bike trail at Makara Hill and then limped back to the clubhouse on a flat tyre that he couldn't fix. How the redoubtable Jonny Hines got lost for an hour and a half at the top end of the Sanctuary visiting the Windmill twice for his efforts. How people searched for monitor Ross Lake at the wrong end of Tinakori Hill (they have the ? in the table below) and how some people ignored Kathryn Fraser sitting in her car at the Windmill. How Lisa Phelan and Briony Davies, lost in Deepest Karori, were helped by a mysterious Sir Galahad? How the question "What are your doing?" directed at Bernie Portenski, Michele Allison and Geoff Brown as they raced through Karori produced the ambiguous answer, "Makara." (Turned out this meant the Makara Loop; they are training for the Gold Coast Marathon.) How the more adventurous, clutching orienteering maps or navigating by the stars (Andy Foster), took the more or less direct route between the Windmill and the southern end of the Sanctuary and Makara Peak. How some went straight up Makara Hill and emerged behind those who had taken the longer route over the MTB trails. Mysteries everywhere.

Thanks to the monitors: Ross Lake (Weld Street end of Tinakori), Kathryn Fraser (Windmill at Polhill), Andy Elvey (on windswept Makara Hill) and head honcho and chief cook Harry Doig back at base camp.

See you at Event Three: "Unfinished Business": Mt Albert/Te Kopahou/Wrights Hill on 27 July.
