18th Masters' 8k Road Race,
Johnsonville, 28 July 2002
First male runner was Chris Speakman (of the host club Olympic), while the first female was Diane Rogers (Trentham United). The first walker was Brenda Burke (Scottish) with Robert Bennett (Scottish) second. The races took place in sunny conditions, with a barely noticeable southerly. The road run is five times round a hilly 1-mile loop in Johnsonville, while the walkers do four laps for 6.4k. In the club runners' teams event (mixed gender, four to count), Scottish was first (Peter Wrigley, Steve Plowman, John and Maryanne Palmer), with 32 points, followed by Olympic (37 points) and Trentham United (56 points). Ellis Goodyear (Capital), for the second year in a row, won the Jim Lockhart and Mariette Hewitson Memorial Baton for being the closest to breaking an age record in the run. After the races, as is the custom, runners and walkers were treated to a hot lunch in the Olympic Harriers' clubrooms. Brian Watson of Olympic Harriers has been organising these races for the Wellington Masters Athletics (Vets Association) since 1985. Steve Hunt (at age 40) of Scottish set the men's race record with a time of 26:15 in 1994, while Judith Stewart, also from Scottish, set the women's record of 31:56 in 1989 when she was 35.
