SATURDAY: A day of final preparation

By Rowan Grieg

Work is progressing on setting up the course and start/finish areas for tomorrow’s big races – the ones we have been waiting for. Up at the trig I managed to talk and photograph some of the passing athletes and visitors taking one last look at the course and the magnificent views of the city that the top of Mt Vic offers. If the weather holds (and even if it doesn’t), we are in for one terrific event.

Checking out the course that sons Jono and Andrew will run tomorrow are parents, Gordon and Lynley Wyatt. Gordon and brother Roger were at one time members of Scottish and Roger’s name is there for all to see on the club honours board for wining a National XC Champs Junior title and 1 mile track title.

From Poland Karol (left) who will run the Junior Men’s race and Tomasz Klisz who will do the 3 lap Senior Men’s race

Members of the Swiss team Sebastian Epiney (left) and Stephane Joly. Sebastian is a little concerned that the track on the uphill section may be too narrow in places for any passing to be done.

Members of the strong Italian team doing light training on Oriental Parade. Included in this group is Vitorria Salvari (right) and Antonio Molinari (2nd from right) who are both highly ranked in the Senior Women’s and Senior Men’s races respectively.
