21st World Mountain Running Trophy Races, 25 September 2005 Jonathan Wyatt won his fifth world mountain running title today and became the first ever runner to win both the unrelenting and undulating forms of the event. And he did it with seeming ease, with a winning margin of 2 minutes and 13 seconds. Jonathan's performance in the race produced a great deal of cheering in the Scottish women's ranks, almost inciting a Jonathan Riot. Third Kiwi and 31st overall was our own Ben Revell. In the women's race, Kate McIlroy also opened up an unassailable lead first on Melissa Moon and then on Scotland's Tracey Brindley in the second lap. In doing this, Kate topped her cracker running season with a world title in her first international attempt at this form of running. Melissa finished seventh. The run of the day may have come from Russian junior woman, Jioulia Mochalova. The Russian team arrived late last night and ran the course blind this morning. Jioulia led from start to finish, tossing aside lack of sleep and jet lag. At sixth, Ruth Croft was the top Kiwi. Vedat Gunen of Turkey won the junior men's race from Mexican Juan Carlos Carera, who was third last year. The top Kiwi was Aaron Jackson in 19th spot. The Italians won the men's and women's open team events. New Zealand was second in the men's event and fifth in the women's. In the junior women, Slovenia was a clear winner, while NZ was fifth. In the junior men, the winner was Turkey and NZ was eighth. In the earlier open race (mistakenly called a "fun run"), competitors could choose to run one, two or three laps. Places were recorded on the finishing order with all events muddled together (below). Nine Scottish (or near Scottish) members competed in the two lap version with young Cameron Goldsmid first Scottish member home in 47:21. The primary and intermediate school events over 1k and 1.6k depending on the school year had heaps of members of the J-team showing up. Many Scottish members helped out in the event, marshalling, timekeeping, ferrying photographers up and down "Molehill Victoria," refereeing, team liaison, Mt Vic commentary (Mick Finn began at 7:30 and was still entertaining us at 3:50), and tail-end "charlie-ing". Great effort, Scottish! Full results | Photos from Friday and Saturday and race day Summary results
