Introducing Scottish Walkers

Scottish has been known for many years for the excellence and depth of its cross country and road runners and track athletes, but our walkers are also to the fore at the national level.

Our current top race walkers are -
Amelia De Lorenzo – NZ champion 2005 – 20k
Peter Baillie - NZ record holder for the 100k road walk
James Hurring - an outstanding walker and coach – returning after a period of semi-retirement.

In addition, we have many competent walkers achieving good results at various competitive levels – whether as race walkers or as sports walkers (free-style) in local 10k and half-marathon walking events.

Scottish has always had walkers in its membership. The secretary at the club’s founding meeting in 1915, A. E.M. Rowlands, represented Australasia and was fourth in the 3,500m walk in the 1908 Olympics in London. Over the years many of our walkers have won national and Athletics Wellington titles. Lynn Murphy and Paul McElwee have also represented New Zealand in road races.

Besides race walkers, we are keen to welcome any sports or free-style walkers and new social walkers, in any age group, from teenagers to those in their latter years.

No matter if you wish to participate in walking as a recreation or a competitive sport we will be very pleased to hear from you.
