Peter Baillie walks 182.648k and sets New Zealand 24-hour record, 1-2 October 3005 Peter Baillie took part in the Annual Sri Chimoy 24-hour track race at Sovereign Stadium in Takapuna and covered a record distance of 182.648k.  Last year, Peter walked 174.129k in wet conditions losing the skin off the soles of his feet. This time surgical tape saved his soul; all he got was some toe blisters. Well done, Peter.

Walking Clinics restart with Top Coach, Newtown Park, 16 October 2005 One of NZ's top walking coaches will be running our Wellington Walking Development Coaching Clinic on Sunday, 16 October. Don Chadderton (who is also President of Athletics NZ) will be attending and guiding the clinic at the Newtown Athletics Track. This is an opportunity not to miss as Don is not only one of the most knowledgeable walking coaches but he also runs a snappy and entertaining clinic.

In addition, we will have the video camera there to record your technique for later analysis which will greatly assist you in improving your Walking.

Please note:
(1) The clinic will be held at the Newtown Track (next to the zoo).
(2) It will commence at 10am and run for two hours (unless there are some who may like to have further coaching.
(3) Charge is the usual $5.00, plus any videoing costs (DVD disc, etc)
(4) To be held rain or shine on the all-weather track.
(5) Both juniors and seniors to attend at the same times

Please email me (Bart Jones) to your confirmation of attendance.

Also we hope to have Peter Baillie there to talk about his 24-hour walk in Auckland last weekend - he created a new NZ Record for a 24-hour walk of 182.648k - a simply amazing achievement.

Scottish Walkers, calculation of club walking championship for 2005, posted 27 September 2005 The men's championship this year is based on the three results from the Peter Tearle Trophy, The Cole Land Cup, and the Athletics Wellington Championships. This is different from the 2003 and 2004 seasons where we also included the race on the Tanadees Cup Day race. The points system used for the men's championship is the same as that used by the runners and is as follows. The fastest times, not handicap finishing places are used in handicap races. After the first race the fastest person receives the same number of points as the finishers. In the event of a draw on points at the end of the season the highest placing in the Athletics Wellington Championship, which is the only judged race is used to decide the result.  This year there were judged and unjudged sections in the Athletics Wellington Champs. Places in the judged section have been ranked above those in the unjudged even if the times were slower. This affected only Bob Gardner and David Lonsdale. David was faster, but was relegated to the "unjudged" section after being DQ'D.

Marton to Wanganui Relay, 10 September 2005 By David Lonsdale  Our walkers once again tackled this interesting and increasingly popular back-country relay on a glorious warm spring day. With only five members to do the 10 laps we were never going to beat the rapidly improving Manawatu teams.

We finished sixth out of 22 teams in a time of 7 hours 12 minutes and 41 seconds (7h 6m 12s in 2004).  Manawatu Striders Magic team won in a new walkers course record of 6h 50m 29s (previously 6h 59m 47s in 2004 by Taranaki) from three Taranaki Race Walkers teams. Manawatu’s Dream team were fifth just under two minutes ahead of Scottish. A good result for us, thanks to an all round effort and some super efforts once again from Peter Baillie.

In addition to the 22 walking teams there were 16 running teams, and nine composite walkers/runners.  This is a relay which our runners should consider building into their programme as preparation for the New Zealand Road Relay which is always two weeks later.  It has a mix of laps, with some very challenging sections. The full course of 69k consists of 10 laps varying from 3k to 9k, with most around 7k.

The social side after the event is held at the Wanganui East Club, and for some teams is as attractive as competing!

Athletics New Zealand Union Road Championships, Feilding, 3 September 2005  By Bart Jones

These events were held on an out and back section of the Manfield Motor Racing Circuit in Feilding. Each 2.5k lap included a steeply banked turn-round point (downhill) and a reasonably steeply cambered curve of about 200-250m on the return journey. On the way out, this camber wasn't so steep on the outward journey, as the walking-line was at the top of the track.

Peter Baillie was 1st in the 55-60 age group with a PB of 55:15 – Bart Jones walked the 10k in  67:48.

Kristeene Parkes for the second year won the Women’s 35-39 year Gold Medal.Tony Sargisson (left) who finished 2nd and Craig Barrett, eventual winner (right)

The photo shows Tony Sargisson (left) who finished 2nd and Craig Barrett eventual winner (right).

2005 Athletics Wellington Road Championships, Trentham, 20 August 2005 In the 10k race walk, it was a Scottish double: Amelia De Lorenzo won the women's race in 57:09, while Peter Baillie led the men's field in 55:39. The innovation this year was the use of a 1k lap: about 400m out and back to the start and then out 100m or so the other way and back.  This allowed walkers to get an accurate idea of their pace.

Bays 5k Turkey Trot, 13 August 2005 By Bart Jones

First=year walker Bob Gardner won the event by completing the 5k exactly in his estimated time of 34:22. With six of the first seven finishers being fro:Scottish, the club again demonstrated that it has the best group of walkers in the centre.

The only non-finisher was Bart Jones. A re-occurrence of a “hammie” first occuring in Tuesday night's “Loaded Hog”  5ker put paid to Bart’s effort after 3ks.

Scottish presents International Walk Coaching Clinic, 2-3 July 2005 Scottish host
ed seven other Wellington Clubs in the first International Coaching Clinic for many years. Grade 2 Coach and Vice-President of the ACT (Australia) Coaches Association, Denis Strangman (front row, third from the left) flew in for the weekend to run this unique event. There were 44 walkers from all over Wellington and the secretary of the NZ Race-walking Association drove down from Hastings to sit in. Scottish membes rin the photo include – James Hurring, Mick Rice, Amelia De Lorenzo, David Lonsdale and Bart Jones

After an hour of theory and discussion inside, we moved outside to observe Jame Hurring’s fine demonstration of the Mexican Drills and other flexibility drills before the walkers were photographed to check their gait. All in all a wonderful morning much appreciated by all.

We will be running monthly focus groups to work on the individual walker's technique. Anyone interested in taking advantage of these coaching groups need only call Bart Jone(04 477 3746 or email: bart.jones@xtra.co.nz)

Scottish Walkers Visit to Manawatu Striders, Palmerston North, 3 July 2005 Scottish walkerhave received an invitation to visit the rapidly developing walking (and running) club – Manawatu Striders. They run a 10k & 5k series on a Sunday morning – our visit is scheduled for Sunday, 3 July, to take part in one of these.

For those of you who know Striders, it will be a good opportunity to say hello to the folk you have met or seen at various events over the past year or so. Those of you who do not know Striders have a look at their web-site - http://www.manawatustriders.org.nz

They are rapidly a developing club along the lines of the Taranaki Walkers with a number of very good walkers coming through, including Michelle and Andrus Lei (Michelle is starting to appear in various national champion level events), Sue Hoskins (who will be known to Peter Baillie and Amelia), Kevin Walters (a newly sub-5-hour marathoner) and several others of similar ability. In addition, they have a large group of social walkers.

The reason for the visit is to start a better contact and communication between the walking community with a view to perhapcreating more interesting eventlike the Taranaki Walking Weekend. If all goes well, we will host Striders in Wellington at a later date.

In addition, several Wellington walkers (from our own club and others) will be taking part in the Manawatu Striders Half Marathon on Sunday, 14 August (see their website - http://www.manawatustriders.org.nz )

For our visit on Sunday, 3 July, the schedule is:

6:30 –7am Leave Wellington in own car (car-sharing) or whatever you wish.

9m:– Participate in the 10k walk

11am –on – Join walking members of Striders in a “Get-to-know each-other” and lunch after which we will return to Wellington.

Peter Tearle Walking Race, Island Bay, 5 June 2005 First under handicap was Andrew Bell (Walk for Health), while Peter Baillie was fastest walker (5:33/k)

Interesting items from previous results. The course record i27:07 by Paul McElwee in 1999 (4:32/k).  And Peter Tearle walked 44:22 in 1999 and this year 44:05. So at the age of 79 he istill improving!
