Wellington Waterfront 5k, Spring Series - Race 11, Queens Wharf, 14 October 2008

Well, it was another tough night at the office, so to speak, with the predominant northerlies we face through October/November being again present and making parts of the return journey quite an effort. Still, there was a very high 80 participants for tonight’s races with no fewer than 27new registrants. We had just two lifetime PBs again tonight that I am aware of and 15 SPBs.

Walkers: Glenn Burrell returned to win tonight’s race walk but was seemingly upset he did not break the 23 minute mark when posting a winning time of 23:02. Daylight was next with Philip Grimmett taking second place with 31:08 and third man home was Tim Dutton in 31:22. Fastest woman was indeed a close race with Robyn McArthur prevailing (just) in 31:19 with Terri Grimmett just a tick back recording 31:22. Third woman home was Susan Henderson who walked the 5k in 36:02.

Runners: Just as I predicted at the start line, Matt Pepler led all the way to win this evening’s race in a winning time of 17:01. Second place went to Mark Anderson with 17:28 and third going to Jamie Maister in 17:35. First woman home was newly recognized and decorated Scottish Life Member Michele Allison who recorded 19:09. Second was Aubrey Begley who ran 20:29 and third went to Victoria Sugden with 20:41.

Well done to Rebecca Speirs and Letisha Tan who both ran lifetime PBs – giving the conditions they have a lot more time improvement up their sleeves on a night with calm conditions.

Thanks to all those runners who volunteered their hand recorded times to help make the results accurate – they all helped a great deal.

Winners of spot prize vouchers were: Carley Boomer, Philip Grimmett, Victoria Sugden, Paul Carlson, John Skinnon, Liz Anderson, Travis Cottreau & Ewan Gestro. Those that didn’t receive them on the night can claim them at a future race.

Thanks again to tonight’s officials - Dan Powell, Bruce & Noeleen Perry, Todd Stevens, Karl Woodhead, Glenn Hughes and Stefan Smith.

A REMINDER:

From now on the race times have changed as the advent of daylight saving allows us to move the start time later in the evening. Ongoing details are:

REGISTRATIONS FROM:          5:30PM onwards at The Chicago Sports Bar, Queen’s Wharf, Wellington

WALKERS/RUNNERS:              5:45PM for all walkers and anyone who feels they will run around 26 minutes or more for the 5k race. It is preferred if you start at this time to help keep the race within a manageable time space – I suggest also that it makes for better racing for those runners joining the earlier start time.

RUNNERS' RACE:                      6:00PM for all runners – expecting to run 26 minutes or less
