Wellington Waterfront 5k Series, Spring, Race 2, Queens Wharf , 12 August 2008

Well, race 2 is now behind us and we cheated the weather gods tonight – picking a window of very good conditions in what was a terrible day weather-wise in Wellington . 64 very dedicated participants were rewarded for their dedication to the cause.

Walkers: A relative newcomer to race walking – Michael Walton ( a converted runner, I gather) led the field and recorded fastest time this evening with 30:25 for the 5k race. Second male home was Tony Burrell in 31:24 with a fair margin back to David Lonsdale in third place with 35:15. Terri Grimmett returned victorious this evening being the fastest woman with a time of 33:03. Second home was Leanne Palmer who posted 34:50 and third place went to Andrea Adams in 35:59.

Runners: Last week it was youth – this week it was experience that took out the win – emphatically as well! One of NZ’s elite athletes, Matt Dravitzki, won as he liked in a sub-16 minute time of 15:49. As I mentioned in my prize-giving announcements – Matt has perhaps been focusing on longer distance targets in recent years and in fact won the New Plymouth Marathon a season ago recording 2h 13m - the fastest time run by a NZer in some two or three decades, I believe. So we were indeed honoured to have Matt’s presence tonight. Second placed was Jason Waite, leading on from where he left off last season with a time of 16:44. Not far behind in third was Joel Wyatt who recorded 16:48 – so a great tussle for runner-up it would seem. Fastest woman tonight easily went to the talented Sarah Christie as she stormed around (after leading the race out for the first few hundred metres) in 17:19. This was actually 5th place overall as well. Great to have you (and coach Kevin Ross) back again Sarah! Runners-up placing was, like the men, a hard fought battle.  However, the experience of Michele Allison prevailed in 19:52 over the youth of Victoria Sugden in 19:54. Both would no doubt be pleased to break the magical 20-minute barrier – given the race conditions.

After just two races we have now had an incredible 126 participants – it’s great that the word is spreading and people are bringing friends, workmates, etc. to come and share the experience.

Thanks again to our new hosts – The Chicago Sports Café/Bar on Queen’s Wharf – as we were able to perform registrations and our short prize-giving within the warmth of the bar – with a number sampling the bar food and beverages. Do try and support them as much as you can.

Thanks again to tonight’s officials - Dan Powell, Todd Stevens and the Scottish senior women members of Belinda Buck, Mandy Simpson, Rebecca Speirs and Diane Morgan.
