Wellington Waterfront 5k, Spring Series - Race 6, Queens Wharf, 9 September 2008

The day of Race 6 dawned very nasty indeed, but by race time we were presented with significantly improved conditions and we had a great turnout of 80 participating. Thankfully – a blustery northerly died down appreciably for the main race.

Walkers: Fresh from a second placing in the men’s open 10k race at last weekend’s National Race Walking Championships, Glenn Burrell walked comfortably to win tonight’s race in a time of 23:49. Not even a late start (he was in the men’s as the gun went off) could hold him back and the 1 minute handicap saw him beat all (starting at the early start time), but 10-year-old Che Grimmond – and it wasn’t for the want of trying on Glenn’s part! Second place went to Michael Walton – back to race walking this week – in a good PB time of 29:21. Philip Grimmett took third place – this again being a Lifetime PB - in a time of 30:17. Terri Grimmett, who also walked into a medal at last weekend’s National Championships, was the fastest woman in tonight’s race with a time of 31:06. Not far behind her was Robyn McArthur in second place. Robyn’s time was 31:12 and third place went to the unlucky (and lucky because she won a spot prize latter on) Alison Samson with her adjusted net time being 31:25 – after missing the start by 8 minutes when her bus into town broke down. Overall, a good night for all walkers, though.

Runners: Winning this evening’s race was well deserved by Al Adams – after having posted many minor placings over the past 5 weeks. Al’s winning time was 17:03. Second home was Tim Hawkes who ran 17:53 and third went to Jamie Maister in a time of 17:58. The winner of the woman’s race was Michele Allison – who had shown significant personal improvement to post a time of 19:22. Second place went to Sally Ann Spencer who ran 19:38 and junior woman Victoria Sugden placed third with a time of 20:22.

Tonight saw just 3 Lifetime PBs posted along with 23 Series PBs. Well done to Alama Moller and Philip Grimmett as well as to everyone who improved again tonight – we’ll get a still one sometime soon I promise!

Thanks again to tonight’s officials - Dan Powell, Bruce Perry, Todd Stevens, Karl Woodhead plus the huge turnout of Scottish senior men who all responded to the call for help: Matt Pepler, Tony Venning (turnaround), Ioasa Kosena, Rees Buck, Stefan Smith, Dave Parsons.
