Wellington Waterfront 5k, Spring Series - Race 7, Queens Wharf, 16 September 2008

Race 7 in the spring series of 5k races was a fine day but with a medium northerly however our great Wellington Waterfront course was pretty sheltered – perhaps a few head winds at certain points but overall times were pretty good this evening for the 81 participants.

Walkers: Alison Samson made in for the race start in time tonight and race walked the fastest time overall to win in 30 minutes 4 seconds. Second place went to Robyn McArthur, with a Lifetime PB of 30:48 and third place went to Terri Grimmett – just a few paces behind - also with a Lifetime PB of 30:50. Fastest and only male was John Leonard who posted a time of 33:44.

Runners: Grant McLean returned to the waterfront to win yet again but he was motivated to running a very good time tonight by the many Scottish junior men – who were out for time trials to help decide rankings for the forthcoming NZ Road Relay Champs in Dunedin early in October. Grant’s winning time was 15:39. Second placing went to Jesse Patel in 16 minutes flat with Hayden Shearman taking third in a Lifetime PB of 16:07. Not only were the Scottish men out in numbers but the Scottish senior women were also out in numbers with first overall going to Team Captain Natalie Smith with a good time of 18:14. Just a few seconds back was evergreen athlete and NZ Olympian - Anne Hare who ran 18:17 and third place went to Michele Allison in a season’s best time of 19:01. So all is looking good for some very good results by the Wellington Scottish teams in three weeks' time.

Tonight saw 5 Lifetime PBs posted along with 29 Series PBs. Well done to everyone who improved again tonight – still waiting for a still night one night soon I promise!

Thanks again to tonight’s officials - Dan Powell, Todd Stevens, David Lonsdale, Bart Jones plus the huge turnout of Scottish senior women who all responded to the call for help: Sally-Anne Spencer, Emmanuelle Chapin, Andrea Farquharson, Seini O’Connor (who volunteered for turnaround duties) and Della Laird who pitched in at the finish also.
