Wellington Waterfront 5k, Summer Series - Race 13, Queens Wharf, 27 January 2009

Well, as promised it was a southerly breeze that prevailed and the rain pretty much kept away. 69 starters for the series of races on tonight’s menu with the 10k option provided proving a popular choice. There were some excellent performances by walkers and runners alike.

Walkers: Michael Walton was very fast around the 5k course tonight – just missing out on a lifetime PB by a matter of seconds. His winning time was 26:35. Second male (and overall) was Tim Dutton who achieved a SPB with his time of 30:05. A sub-30-minute time is very near I suggest! Third went to Mike Lane in a season’s best time of 30:15. Fastest woman tonight was Andrea Adams who also walked a lifetime PB to win in 35:41. Second place went to Carol Briesman with 36:22 and third went to Daphne Jones in a good time of 37:49.

Runners:

5k Race: Daniel Clendon returned to the waterfront course and almost recorded a SPB in winning tonight’s race in a time of 16:44. Second place went to Mark I Anderson (with an I – as we have two runners with same names and similar abilities). Mark’s time was 17:20. Third place went to Patrick MacKay in 18:32. Victoria Sugden was tonight’s woman’s winner, recording a time of 20:13. Just a few strides behind was Alice McCubbin-Howell who posted 20:15 for second place (in a good season’s best time) and not far away again in third was Zoe Melling – also with a season’s best time of 20:23. So some close racing all round.

10k Race: Grant McLean was not out for a stroll tonight – taking the race in convincing style in an excellent time of 33:06. Incidentally, Grant’s halfway time split at the 5k mark was 16:41 (16:25 second half negative split) and this would have won him the 5k race tonight also. Second placing went to Mark Te Punga who enjoyed the 10k option provided. His time was a solid 35:38. Third place went to Al Adams with another good time of 35:47. Fastest woman tonight was Lotty Turnidge who also posted an excellent time of 37:34. Daylight was next with Betty Harp taking second in 41:59 and third going to Karyn McLean in a time of 46:05.

A big thanks to tonight’s officials – Dan Powell, Bruce Perry, Todd Stevens, Belinda Buck and Andrea Farquharson.

Spot prizes went to: Katie Eng, Todrick Taylor, Mark Venning, Mark Ingram, Bruce Wattie, David Jaggard, Ian Fay & Karaka Tuhakaraina – congratulations to all.

Don’t forget – note down our next 10k option for 17 March 2009 and also pencil in one for the last race of the season on 7 April 2009. Looks like they are here to stay! More details will be posted in the future events section of the website over the next few weeks.

Back to usual next week – with Olympic Harriers again officiating the 5k races.

REGISTRATIONS FROM:          5:30pm onwards at The Chicago Sports Bar, Queen’s Wharf, Wellington

WALKERS/RUNNERS:              5:45pm for all walkers and if you feel you'll run around 26 minutes or more for the 5k race. It is preferred if you start at this time to help keep the race within a manageable time space – I suggest also that it makes for better racing for those runners joining the earlier start time.

RUNNERS' RACE:                     6:00pm for all runners – expecting to run 26 minutes or less
