Wellington Waterfront 5k, Summer Series - Race 15, Queens Wharf, 10 February 2009

Well, we delivered a completely still night but alas it was still too warm for many (quite a humid evening) with requests to turn down the heat by, say, 10 degrees. Hard to please everyone, it would seem. Just 51 participants – perhaps many saving themselves for this coming weekend and the annual Wellington Round the Bays runs – with a Half Marathon option this year as well.

Walkers: Michael Walton was again very fast around the 5k course tonight – cruising to win in very good time of 27:17. Second-placed male was Andrew Shelley who walked an excellent Lifetime PB of 28:35 with Tim Dutton taking third place in the men’s race with 30:25. Winning the women’s race, in yet another Lifetime PB (they just seem to keep on coming for her) was Terri Grimmett who smashed the 30-minute barrier with a time of 29:40. No doubt another assault on the annual Triathlon Champs is not far away for Terri as she peaks well at this time of the year. Placing second was Leanne Palmer who posted a SPB time of 34:27 with third placing going to Carol Briesman in a time of 36:38.

Runners: Just out for a warm-up for this coming weekend, no doubt, Grant McLean trotted around the course to win in 17:06. Second-placed runner was Tom Naylor with an improved time of 17:43 and third went to Tim Rickerby (very close) in 17:44. It was a good battle for first-placed woman, with young Victoria Sugden just snatching the win in a time of 20:40 and Karen Gillespie taking second just a few metres back in 20:45 – with a season's PB time so no doubt she was pleased with her efforts. Third place went to Maryann Moller who was not quite able to match last week’s time – her time tonight being 22:09. Twenty One minutes something is not far off though!

Congratulations also to Matt Walters – the only other participant tonight to beat the conditions and run a Lifetime PB – Well done Matt.

A big thanks to tonight’s officials – Dan Powell, Bob Stephens, Adrian Shields, Dave Colquhoun, Paul Rodway, Neil Stodart, Richard Brent, Ray Marten, and Phil Valentine (turnaround cone).

Spot prizes went to: Michael Walton, Cherie Flintoff, Ross Woodley, Gary Moller, Neil Price, Richard Findlay and Letisha Tan – congratulations to all.

Don’t forget – note down our next 10k option for 17 March 2009 and also pencil in one for the last race of the season on 7 April 2009. Looks like they are here to stay! More details will be posted in the future events section of the website over the next few weeks.

Next week – Olympic Harriers will again officiate the 5k races .

REGISTRATIONS FROM:          5:30pm onwards at The Chicago Sports Bar, Queen’s Wharf, Wellington

WALKERS/RUNNERS:              5:45pm for all walkers and if you feel you'll run around 26 minutes or more for the 5k race. It is preferred if you start at this time to help keep the race within a manageable time space – I suggest also that it makes for better racing for those runners joining the earlier start time.

RUNNERS' RACE:                     6:00pm for all runners – expecting to run 26 minutes or less
